2017 Ontario Spring Wild Turkey season

Got out this morning with my buddy and his 14 year old daughter for her first wild turkey hunt. Heard gobbling early from the tree line facing my blind. Spotted a big tom in a tree just as the light came up. Talked to him softly and he responded beautifully.

We saw him fly down in our direction about 150m away from us. He started strutting immediately and as we watched him do his thing from afar, 3 hens showed up next to him. Called a little more to try and coax him our way when all of a sudden a second tom showed up! They squared off a bit, posturing to each other in front of their group of hens. Called a bit more and the lead tom started heading our way with the second guy and hens in tow.

They circled left of my decoys and then at 17 yards, both toms were in our sights at 6:30am. I putted to get their heads up and right on cue we both took our shots, her the bird on the left and me the bird on the right! Two nice toms down! Both were very similar in size/age with 9" beards and 22lbs, 1" spurs. This was her first hunting harvest and I was so happy to be there and help her take her first wild turkey!

That's awesome! Great experience for both and memories of her first hunt that brought home a very nice bird. You never forget these things.

It's official..... thanks to work, my season is a complete wash..... first time since the hunt was introduced in Ontario actually.....

That being said, I am really enjoying the success pics and "runningfool" has really got me excited... next year will be my oldest boy's first year apprenticing....... I am going to write this season off with a smile on my face knowing that I may have the priveledge of intoducing my son to something as special as runningfool introduced that young lady to......

Congrats to you all, and as arclight said, keep them coming.......

You betcha bud...... and hey, who knows what I left in the woods undisturbed to grow another year ..... I'd like to see him take a bigger bird than in he have next year...... I have a spot reserved for a glass covered turkey mount in my house and would rather see him fill it than me....... but that's the ultimate...... I will have him taking the first jake he gets a shot at, and that may even be the one that gets mounted......

Be sure to document it! I wish my old man had a camera when I got my first deer. It was the nest tasting venison I have had :)

I was finally able to get out for a turkey hunt today. I had about 10 birds roosted a stones throw from my blind. After a very late fly down, the birds decided to walk opposite to me. Im pretty sure my flashlight spooked them while retreiving my memory card from my game cam. Anyhow, after a few hour wait, I decided to try a spot and stalk. I made my way to the opposite field to where the birds were located. My spot and stalk failed when I came across a big hen acting in a manner I've never seen. After watching for about 10 mins, I noticed that the turkey was being attacked by a few red winged blackbirds. This was going on for a long while. Once I noticed that I was busted by the toms I was looking for, my attention turned to seeing why this hen was being harrassed. What I discovered was interesting. The blackbirds were raiding the hens nest!! I found one freshly broken egg (punctured with a small hole) in her nest and the blackbirds appeared to be the cause. Who would have thought those bastards would be up to that kind of crap!!! Anyone ever see this?

I called this guy in from two fields away. I couldn't spot him but the gobbling kept getting closer. 45 minutes later I spot a hen so I start calling to her and she responds with some yelps, clucks, and purrs so we talk to each other for a while. All of a sudden I hear a loud gobble. The hen had him by the proverbial balls and he was going wherever she led him. I still can't see him but he's just around the corner and I can hear him spitting and drumming. Finally he comes into sight but he won't come into my decoy setup, he's content with strutting around the real hen. I watch this go on for 10 minutes and realize that he's not going to give me an easy shot. He's at my far right so I wait for 1-2 yards of separation from the hen and take him with an awkward shot at 20 yards.

Has anyone spotted a bearded hen this year? I got pictures of one on my game cam recently. She has a very thin beard about 4 inches long. I bet she's the kind to not shave her legs or wing pits as well....

Nice bird! And thanks for the story. It really is pretty cool how each and every hunt plays out differently. It easy to understand why we get hooked so hard on Turkey hunting!

Got myself a bird this morning.
I put a lot of time in this season.
Had a lot of fun.

I plucked this bird, hope to deep fry it whole.
Have any of you deep fried a wild turkey? I'll done store bought many times and they've been delicious.
Just wondering if a wild turkey will fry up nice and moist?

We have done whole deep fried wild turkey and they are great, but cook slightly less by weight than you would a farmed bird.

I have deep fried some but only the breast turns out nice and moist, the legs are almost inedible. I then started to pluck the bird but separate the breast from the legs being careful to keep skin in tact on breast and just fry the breast (put legs into a soup or stew). They turn out very well if done properly, I've had non hunters tell me it is the best turkey they have ever eaten. Even my niece who had it 10 years ago reminds me every year that was the best turkey she has ever had. I also inject my birds before frying.

Congrats on connecting with a bird, that jake will eat fantastic!!

Only once and never again. We like t9 slice the breast into nuggets or cutlets. Bread then and fast fry them..so good.

Copied from my other post in a seperate thread but wanted to include in this one!

Went back out this morning and was in the field at 4am this time.

Chose the west side rear field with the thick bush to the east. Set up my hub style ground blind 10 yards from a thin tree line with my decoys set up 15 yards north. Half strut jake first on east side, then laying hen in middle, then upright hen on west.

A coyote was kind enough to howl and cause a shock gobble letting me know that there were still a few males roosting up in the bush. Didnt hear any hens tho.

Did some soft clucks and after a few minutes did a fly down cackle. Still learning but the Primos Hookup is easy enough to work lol heard a few gobbles off and on as sun came up. Saw a lone hen walk in from the south east clesring side and start feeding and preening her feathers.

I was hoping she would bring a jake or a tom in behind her. No such luck.

She poked around then left through the thin tree line behind my blind heading south.

Little while goes by and i hear some more gobbling from the eastern south side field from the bush. I do some yelps and clucks. Then a few minutes go by and i hear the gobble REALLY close by behind me.

So i get out of my seat in my blind and slide open one of the rear windows and see through the trees a big fan rotating around in the field directly south of me. Awesome!!

So i do a few more clucks on my pushpull call. No gobble but i see him put his fan down and start heading west in my direction.

So now im in remodel mode! I am a left hand shot and my chair is facing the decoys anticipating a turkey coming from the front and east.

So now a turkey is coming from behind me and west.

I hop out of my seat and close the front windows and open up the ones on the west side. I dont have time to move my chair because itd be too loud and the turkey is moving at a good pace.

Im kneeling now and have my mossberg 500 on a shooting stick pointing out the corner of one of the windows. Just as i realize i need more of a shooting lane and start to open another side of the window the jake appears in the gap between the tree line.

So i stop opening the window and freeze. It sees my decoys and be lines it towards them. So fast that my shooting lane runs out before i can get a lock on him. GREAT! Now i gotta open back up the decoy side windows and hope not to bump into anything in my blind while turning back around!!!

Just as i start looking at my footing as to what i need to sidestep in order to spin around towards this jake investigating my decoys..... i see a much bigger bird coming down the same path as the jake! Luckily tho, he is walking along nice and slow.

He just cruises into my shooting lane, i struggle with the extremely stiff mossberg safety (ill have to take a look at it and try to smooth it out) and line up my red dot. I let him slowly walk into the crosshairs with his head out and touch off a 3 inch winchester double xx number 4 at 35 yards. He drops backwards like a rock. The jake comes over and runs towards the tree line like a hostage that was just set free and worried he is going to be shot lol quite amusing!

Here he is. Taken down around 730am. Looks like an old jake/young tom? Fan was flush but the middle two feathers were slightly different colour. 17.8 pounds with 3/4" spurs and 9.5" beard.

Looking forward to cooking him up on the holiday monday!

PS: dont know why the last pic is rotated! And i was wearing all black while in the blind but after i got out and collected the bird and was out in the sun i took off the black mask/gloves and black hoodie i was wearing while in the blind.

Went out yesterday but could only go in the afternoon
Set out a few decoys and sat back in a tree line

Saw a hen in a empty field didn't Come near even with calls
Around 530 or 6 a large hen spotted in same field
we called her over hoping a male would be following
An hour this damn bird walked around our decoys, didn't seem interested just feeding
Stared right at us wasn't phased at all
Totally uninterested in calls or decoys once she got to o our field
She Didn't make a single sound for an hour
Cest LA vie
Going to a different spot either more sightings tomorrow around 5am to get setup
