2017 Waterfowl season

The Environment Canada site that sells the electronic permits is still not running yet. I have been to two post offices looking to buy my permit and neither did not have any. Hopefully this week they will get their act together.

I bought my licenses, but likely won't get out after waterfowl that often, as most of my hunting will be for pheasant, sharptails, and huns over the dog. Seeing a lot of white fronted and Canada geese in the area, but not a lot of mallards or pintails.

I have never hunted waterfowl before but this year I am going to try my best to shoot exactly one Canada goose to try goose jerky. Who am I kidding, I'm going to shoot as many as I can and find recipes for the extra later!

Good luck! I love waterfowl season. When the action starts up, it's fast and furious.

everything is ready
the pup feels the excitement in the air
the mighty 10:s are cleaned and ready to go
layout and bale blinds are stuffed
mutt hut is stuffed
decoys are sorted washed clean
just need mother nature
and birds to co operate
as well as that beautiful alarm going off saying its GOOSE 0CLOCK
sure am excited this year
will be the first for the pup,
my brand new used 10 gauge I bought from the spank
4 dozen new big foot decoys
grandson has booked the first 2 weeks off to be here opening day
got permission on fields
and more crops are being cut everyday
lots of small ponds and slews are dry
but the big ones and the pea fields are all loaded with geese
seen a flock of snows the other night
kinda early for them but they definitely were snow geese
got my eyes to the sky constantly
feel like a young kid again waiting go on my first ever hunt

Just went out to fix up the blind yesterday.. lots of ducks around; maybe 1000 on the slough where I hunt. Not much for geese yet. Fields were late getting planted and nothing has been cut yet. Got to check the cord & weights on my dekes, and make sure I have enough shells for the weekend. Only days away now!

Well this seems like the perfect post for a first timer to ask some questions about Canada goose hunting.
1. What kind of field should I be looking for and what should I avoid?
2. If you were to recommend a call from either cabelas or wholesale sports what would it be and are flutes a good option?
3. Would it be better to build a ground blind or buy a layout blind?
Also I thought I'd let those who didn't know shells are on for cheap at wholesale I think 15% off. I bought a bunch of score 3" steel shells for 12 bucks a box.

1. Should be looking for a field that has geese ! Usually cut corn, wheat, or freshly planted fields have the best potential for his, but there's no point setting up in one if the geese aren't using it. We usually scout the night prior to every hunt, they will typically return in the morning if they are feeding there in the evening.

2. Best to try some out and see what you like, short reeds have a bigger learning curve than flutes, but can produce wider range of sounds.

3. Blinds also depend on the fields being hunted, if possible ditches and fence bottoms make good blinds, but often birds are weary of these spots. Layouts are nice because they allow you to change your spot in the field depending on where the geese are feeding in it.

I checked out my spread this morning and everything looks great. Lay-out blind is also good to go. Today was the Alberta opener for the northern half of the province, however, it is to hot for any kind of hunting. https://imgur.com/wDyMoyl

1. Scout!! Find the fields the birds are using. You're in SK too and so far I am not seeing much cut except pea fields. Birds love the peas so they are in them already.

2. Forget the flute, buy and learn to use a short reed. Remember though, until you have mastered at least the basic honk don't call to birds. You'll only put them off your spread.

3. Ground blind vs layout blind? Buy a layout for when you need to layout hunt and in places you can hunt from a ground blind go for it. Its always more comfortable and you shoot much better standing than seated so any time I can hint from a ground blind I go that route.

Geese are flying here! I'm lucky enough to be able to hunt them in the fields on our property right beside the house. Gun is ready and waiting for Thursday, shell belt is loaded with 10ga BBB! Bring it on!

Sounds like your serious about putting some Geese in the Freezer this weekend !!
Reminds me of my BPS and the Triple B's.
I can almost hear the thunder and smell that burning powder.
Good Hunting and a Healthy limit !

I got out this morning and it was a beautiful morning to be on the lake. There were lots of birds moving, both geese and ducks. The wind wasnt favourable to my position, but I was able to get a couple shots off and made out with two geese. I love those days where there are no wasted shells!

Got out for the early goose this morning. Many many ducks out but only saw a few geese. But it was enough as got my first of the year. Pictures below also saw this little spike and doe. Great start to the season. Let's fill 2017 waterfowl with pictures guys.

I have went out twice and got three snow geese so far. I am not a serious waterfowl hunter (no decoys and calls, etc) I just shoot whatever comes into range. The 3" BB drop them like a rock out of my M37, pretty happy with it.
