2018 Waterfowl thread

Nice to see a thread on this website about waterfowl!
We're getting ready as well and surprised to see the season starts earlier in the Western part as opposed to us (Quebec area).
My team and I have approximately 180 snow geese, 40 full body canada goose, plenty of ducks, the new stuff this year are 24 silhouettes (anyone has experience with those?)
A new Altan blind and fox pro snow crow call, can't wait to try out those new goodies.
Anyone popcorn their spots?
We put maybe 40-80 kg of corn in rivers where we hunt and have 40-60 ducks flying away each time we come feeding them.
Good luck to all!

Silhouettes are effective and can help fill in a spread. Check your provincial regs and follow them to the letter regarding baiting. I know from personal experience even having an empty livestock feedbag in the back of your vehicle can result in a lot of misery even if you aren't baiting waterfowl.

Agreed,
Where we hunt you need to stop two weeks prior to the opening day, you must not have corn or whatever the day you hunt, you can still have baits 400m from your hunting site during hunting season.
I don't know of anyone that might've happened but I'll keep this in mind!

Actually you must cease placing bait 14 days prior to season and bait must not be present 7 days prior to season. Thats right in the federal regs. And no you may not place bait within 400 metres of your site during an open season. The regs specify you may not hunt within 400 metres of any place bait is present. In order to place bait during an open season you must acquire a federal permit to feed waterfowl and the location specified on it as an approved feeding site (aka sanctuary).

No, because that would be illegal no matter what part of Canada you hunt

Scroll down to section 14 Baiting Restrictions and educate yourselves.

I'm going to take the pup out in the morning, have a nap next to a pond and let her wake me up when the birds show... or not. ;)

Alarm is set for 4:00 tomorrow morning, layout blind is brushed in, sandwiches made, blind bag loaded, tomorrow is opening morning. Fresh cut barley field here I come! Can’t wait to get out there with a couple of hunting buddies.

Missed the opener 2 years in a row now, timeline crunch on projects that cannot be put aside!
last year I was working at sunrise at the lake and it sounded like a fire fight when legal light hit!LOL
about 1,500 birds pounding into a 1/2 section with three different outfits in there , wow what a shoot!!
i drive by on my way to the lumber store in time to see some specs circling into my friend's blind, that was cool!

Slow morning as expected. We don't have much in the way of geese, but it gives me an excuse to get out and scout for ducks. Good company if nothing else

Cory

Got a couple Canadas before 8:00.

It's my first time trying opening day in September after about 20 years waterfowling now.

If I was more patient I might have had another shot as there were more flights but I figured two was all I wanted to pluck this afternoon anyway.

Finished the last of the painting on my goose floaters today . Opens here on the 4th . However I will not be getting out do to work .

Been out every day of the long weekend. Saw nothing on Saturday, switched locations on Sunday and missed some incoming Canadas...and to my horror realized I was shooting cylinder bore at geese at range. Fixed that Saturday nigh and was out on Sunday morning...success! Having the right choke tube installed makes a difference.
