2018 Waterfowl thread

Heres my question for the water fowl hunters out there can I hunt them with a .410 shotgun? Due to the fact that I am in a paraplegic in a wheelchair and have trouble just getting out there I figured a lighter gun would be easier for me to use. Also if anyone has any tips or tricks I could use I'd appreciate it very much. PM me please thank you.

You may find a 410 very limiting in range. If you can handle the weight and a bit more recoil of a 20ga you would have a much more effective gun and many more options for ammunition choice not to mention better priced ammunition. I would also think given your situation you’ll need a partner to assist you to get in and out of the field, blind, boat or whichever you are hunting from.

There is no reason that you can't handle light 20 gauge loads... you would be far better off with a 20 gauge for waterfowl... try a light semi for recoil reduction.

Or better yet a heavier 20gauge gas operated semi, 1100 comes to mind, any gas operated gun would be good. If recoil is still objectionable add weight to the gun to tame it.

He will probably need a light gun... prolonged use of a heavy gun in the seated position puts alot of strain on the core muscles, especially if there is alot of pivoting and twisting, as you would expect when waterfowling...but if a light weight gun is coupled with lightloads in a semi action, the recoil should be very manageable.

Last Saturday was a gong show. The morning in the duck blind was slow. Evening we hit a strip of corn the farmer left about 100yds long and 6 rows wide. Wound up with 16 Canadas & 4 ducks. The old man kept shooting way too soon as they were coming in...lol. He kept saying “they’re right over my head! “ lol. 1/2 blind with a triple bypass, stubborn as eff, guess he can do what he wants. The 2 youngins each got their first goose.
1963Beretta, is that a Weatherby? I’m using the choke with the 3 notches, modified I believe, with 3” bbs to 3” #3 shot. BB seems to work out better.

The Weatherby SA 08 worked perfect.....except when the girl had to shoot. Shot once and failed to chamber the next shell, she could've gotten two. Ran like a top after that. Conditions were rain/sleet. Gave er a complete cleaning once I got home. On a side note, that instruction manual is terrible!

Good point. I didn’t think of the issues with mounting/swinging and rotating from a seated position with a heavier gun. Guess it’d all depend on Rimp9’s core muscle condition etc. Good to think about.

Fantastic work everyone! Awesome to see the generation bloodline continuing this great tradition, heritage and custom.

Nice photo! Memories to last a lifetime. The gun in the photo I posted earlier was a Franchi 48.

Was out this morning and had a lot of action at first light. The colder weather definitely got birds moving. Shot 6 ducks within 15 mins before I turned my attention to geese. As luck would have it, I lost 1 mallard while trying to chase it down across the lake. And as I was out doing laps in the boat after it, a nice flock of Canada’s settled comfortably in my decoys. Arghhh. Would have been nice if I wasnt hunting alone. At least someone would have had a chance to shoot a triple.

The cold weather caused the decoys to frost up this morning, so some flocks flared on us, but we still managed eight white fronted geese, and one Canada that landed right in the spread. The snows that were in the field last night, were a no show this morning.
