2018 Waterfowl thread

Here is a pic the other night from an impromptu goose/duck shoot.
I am not in the habit of pass shooting geese with a sub but they were coming in within range and the little 20 hammer double work out well!

Was out on Sunday....tried my luck for some mallards at first light but only came out with one greenhead. Relocated to more open waters for some buffleheads and shot a box and a half of shells for a limit in about 15 mins. Man I love hunting those little buggers....they are so fast and decoy better then any other living creature on this earth. I spent more time chasing birds then I did dropping them. So much fun.

What decoys do you use on buffs?

We always pass shoot them from a causeway or shoot them when they come into our black duck spread, but they don't actually decoy to our black ducks, they land 50 yards downstream and swim in on the tide every time.

Many years ago I found random decoys on clearance at Bass Pro that were the right size and shape as buffleheads. I dont recall what type of ducks they were suppose to be, but I got them and repainted them myself to look like buffleheads. Then about 4 years ago, Cabelas and Bass Pro started selling actual bufflehead decoys and I bought a pack that consisted of 6 drakes. At that point I repainted my original ones as hens. They work like a charm...buffleheads fly right in and land in the middle of them. I had a friend who bought cheap decorative pool decoys at Dollarama which were shaped like small mallards and repainted them to look like buffleheads and had the same results. On Sunday I had groups of hens stay in my decoys while I was shooting passing drakes. The hens were staying put for quite a number of shots

One thing to also mention is that goldeneyes and hooded mergansers also readily decoy into the bufflehead decoys, so you’ll want to be aware that you may attract ducks that you wish you didnt shoot.....

Nice work on the buffies! Love when I see flights of those eager little speedsters coming through. Many guys around here don’t care for diver hunting but I’m beginning to develop a soft spot for it. Were you hunting solo? From shore or boat? Thanks for sharing with us.

one thing I learned wth my kids and grand kids
was if you take yer kids hunting and teach them to hunt you wont have to hunt for yer kids, they are never to young to take them hunting

I fully agree with you, the kids always enjoy any chance out in the field. In fact we were out hunting ruffed and blue grouse this weekend. My earlier comment was about our lack of time to put together a good duck shoot so far this year. As much as we enjoy getting out, life has been crazy busy this last few months. Enjoy the season everyone.

I was hunting solo and was hunting from the shore of an island that requires boat access. I dont care for divers either, but I make an exception for bufflehead. They are too much fun

just some the videos and pictures I took over the last cpl years of hunting seasons and training, and just enjoying this Little dogs companionship, she has made a place in our home and hearts , I have limited video capability and am not a good photographer , I've missed most of her great retrieves , long distance retrieves and blind retrieves, after working with an outfitter for two weeks this year and last year and myself and friends she can proudly say she has retrieved over 1000 birds in her first two seasons one big gander that landed 10 yards in front of her blind she caught with out even a shot fired,, now I have to up my game on training and take her the full length to get her grand masters, it may just be a pipe dream with my training but its a great dream , I believe she has the ability to achieve this venture

Getting out more these days. Got a goose and a mallard out of the inlaw's pond last week while in the middle of slaughtering chickens. They definitely picked a bad day to show up. Went south of Saint John today with a buddy and passed on a lot of buffleheads but shot a couple of black ducks in coastal creeks. Bought a new canoe to take out for some solo jump shooting, hoping it works this weekend.

The third season for Canadas just opened this am . Saw a few flocks going over but too busy to scout yesterday. We will be keeping an eye out for spot and stalk opportunities as work has screwed up early morning hunts this year.

Duck hunting has been pretty decent. Three of us limited in an hour last week and a couple days ago, my son took out a newbie and they were limited in 3 hours. All mallards.
