2019 Waterfowl thread

Half of the geese and pretty much all of the ducks from my field, decided to move to the next field that was combined yesterday, but we still had a good shoot this morning. The highlight of the morning ,was having eight big Canadas come in, four of us opened fire, all eight geese dropped, and two of us each had a round left, when the shooting stopped.

It was a cold morning out today with a lot of wind. Geese weren't moving at all, but lots of ducks flying at first light. Managed to quickly shoot a limit of woodies and mallards, then packed up early and got off the lake before the white caps started. Spent more time driving then hunting, but Im ok with that if I’m shooting birds

Because game management is based on regions and zones... for migratory birds, it is based on flyways "and" winter and summer ranges... needs change up and down each flyway... it would make no sense to attempt to manage numbers in several flyways using data from a single flyway, ie. Using Brandt population data from the Atlantic flyway and applying it to the Pacific flyway... or Central snow goose data and applying it to the Atlantic. It is no different than managing deer herds in different provinces. Would you want the recently established Ontario elk herd to try to hold up under a No-Draw over-the-counter tag purchase system? We have already seen how that game management goes in the closure of grizzly hunting in the GBR... an area that has an extremely healthy, huntable population of gizzlies. In this day and age, emotion and rhetoric is ruling over science in game management and that does not bode well for the future.

Migratory birds don't necessarily have flyway fidelity. That also ignores places where flyways converge. It's not like a guy in Arkansas selects his birds based on where they flew down from.

So you’re suggesting limits should be the same regardless of where one is located on this continent? What would you propose to be the limits for said migratory birds?

It was our Heritage Days, youth hunt opener near Vancouver on saturday. We took out 4 boys, youngest was a 13 yr old first time duck hunter. The 16 year olds let him take first shot, no disappoints as he nailed the first single and we all have a great memory from the day!
Boys shot their limit of ducks and added 12 geese, dogs did a great job on their first day out this season. One more weeks wait for the rest of us....

Set up for snows this morning on a field holding around 5,000. When daybreak came birds started moving immediately. We had alot of ducks and specks on us at legal shooting time but passed as a few snows were headed our way. We never did get the big concentration of birds come to the field though but with singles, pairs and small flocks up to 30 or so at a time working us we got some good in your face action shooting whites feet down butts almost dragging the dirt from 10 to 35 yards in front of us into the 300 Avian fullbody decoys we set out. We also set out 3 clones, 12 flyers, two lucky ducks and a 400 watt 4 speaker homemade e-caller system we run off a big deep cycle battery that also powers the clones. We had a strong west wind. We set the a-frame blind on the west side of a bale to hide us in its shadow from the rising sun and put the decoys on the north side in front of us to crosswind the birds from an east to west approach. It worked great. I ran my 20 gauge SX3 shooting 7/8 oz # 2 Kent Fasteel through an IC choke. It was cool to see birds fold up clean with the 20. Our last flock of the day was the best as 50+ snows piled in at 7-15 yards and many landing in the decoys when the shot was finally called. The birds jumping from the ground were the lucky ones as each of us focused on the main flock 4-10 ft off the ground almost at dead stall in the strong wind and after emptying our 9 rounds between us the dog brought 10 birds back to the blind. The funniest moment was a single mallard I had to myself 15 yards out cruising over the decoys feet down in low gear and I missed it clean emptying my gun in the process. We all busted a gut over that one! Lol. We ended the day with 40 snows, 1 ross, 1 blue, 2 specks, 5 mallards and 1 pintail. What an experience!! On a fun note my buddy texted afterwards and asked if I realized it was 3 years to the day we hunted snows on a neighbouring field, 3 of us again and put 51 of them on the ground. It was also the day CGN member Doug arrived in town to meet up for some waterfowling and next day I was able to put him on his first ever snows and specks. Such a cool thing in my books!

I'm suggesting they should reevaluate how limits are decided seeing as how we take account of birds and our understanding of their behavior has changed.

I’ve taken plenty of ducks with bands, but this was my first goose...

Great job there! Getting young people involved in hunting is the best an most effective measure to ensure a future for shooting and heritage sports.

What brand a frame blinds do you guys use?

If you’re asking me, we use lattice from Rona. It was damaged, cost us $44 all in for 2 pieces of framed lattice 4x8. We support it with 1/2” rebar, the ends are bamboo garden fencing (around $40 at Home Depot). We cut long grass and use zip ties to hold it to the lattice. Works great, easy to move or tear down. On some blinds we have a plywood base but the one pictured is muddy floor...

Some great pix there fellas keep it up.
Only been out once myself but love seeing the pix while I'm at work.
