CDTSA will once again be holding 3 3-Gun matches this year. Mark your calendars for:

June 7CANCELLED
July 12RegistrationRound Count
September 13RegistrationRound Count

As always, we will be setting up the day before and permitting camping. Camping will start on the Friday night before matches, for anyone who wants to make a weekend out of it. Setup will start around 10AM the Saturday before all matches.

It is very important that we get a good turnout to help set up the match the day before, as well as help from all the participants to put stuff away when we're done. These are fun matches, but they can only happen if everyone chips in to help.

Here are some answers to questions that I'm sure a lot of you have. If you want some clarification on any of my answers, let me know. If this information brings up more questions, let me know.

Directions to the range - On our website, we have a downloadable map to the Milo range. Please pay very close attention to the requirement to come down Range Road 223 and backtrack along Township Road 184. This keeps your dust out of our closest neighbours on Range Road 224, plus it's a safer road (less hills). If this map is in any way unclear, please let me know and I'll see if I can cook up a version that can be downloaded directly to Google Maps on your phone for turn-by-turn awesomeness.
http://www.cdtsa.ca/uploads/1/2/7/1/12719138/milo_range_pen_line_map__1_.pdf

Registration - We will again be using Practiscore for registration and scoring. Details will be available later, but as in the past, people should start showing up at or before 9:00AM to check in, fill out guest passes, pay, etc. Registration will be followed by a safety briefing. We will begin the safety briefing at 9:30 AM sharp. Attendance at the safety briefing is mandatory. If you arrive after the safety briefing, you will be turned away.

Black Badge and other Certifications - We do not require holster courses. There may be parts of the courses of fire that are different if you do not have a holster course. Basically, if you don't have a holster course, you won't be allowed to start a stage with a round in the chamber of your pistol. We do, however, frequently require you to start with an empty pistol regardless of training or certification as part of the CoF for a stage. Our matches are set up to appeal to both 3-Gun aficionados as well as first-timers.

Round Count - Typically, we keep the match round count in the neighbourhood of 150, total. That is any combination of pistol, rifle, shot shells, and slugs. Prior to the match, we will announce an overall breakdown. For example "Match X on day Y will require 50 pistol, 75 rifle, 18 shot shells, and 6 slugs." I will stress that you should always bring extra ammo. The round counts are for a 'perfect' score, and we don't see many perfect scores. Additionally, if there is a failure of range equipment (timer, prop failure, etc), you may be required to reshoot a stage. I'm typically showing up to a match with probably 4x as much ammo as I need, but I like to make people feel good by missing a lot.

Amenities - We're far enough from the nearest town that you cannot run off to get lunch, water, sunscreen, etc during the match. We're an outdoor range. Sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's cold, sometimes it's windy, sometimes it's muddy. I would recommend bringing an entire change of clothes, just in case. If you have a cart for carrying all your stuff, bring it. Our range is built on a 1/4 section, so there's some walking involved when going from stage to stage. Plan to move your stuff around by carrying it or using a cart. Bring lunch, water, sunscreen, bug spray, a hat, sunglasses, etc. See the rule book for information on carts.

Rules - Our official rule book is here: http://www.cdtsa.ca/uploads/1/2/7/1/12719138/cdtsa_3gun_rules_2016_final.pdf

Ammunition - See the rule book for information on permissible ammunition. The Coles Notes version is that we do not allow any ammunition with steel penetrator cores. If your bullets stick to a magnet, they will not be allowed. NOTE: The bullet cannot stick. Steel-cased ammo with lead-core bullets is 100% fine.

Given that the Chief Medical Officer in Alberta shut down all gatherings of more than 15 people the other day, until September, are you still going to try and run matches?

The 15 person limit has been in effect for a while. What changed is that it was extended for the entire "summer", which will most likely impact our July events. We're holding off on officially cancelling them until we get a little closer to the opening of registration. For example, registration for our July match doesn't even open for a month. This gives us plenty of time to keep an eye on the situation and respond accordingly.

Hey All,

We're putting the finishing touches on a plan to get the rest of the 2020 3-Gun season back on track.

This plan will contain measures to deal with COVID-19.

Additionally, new divisions will be added to make sure as many people can participate in the matches as possible.

Currently, the intention is to hold the July and September matches on their planned dates.

Stay tuned!

What's the plan to deal with the rifle portion of the course? everyone's 3 gun rifle is essentially banned.

As mentioned in the previous post, additional divisions will be added to work around that. It does create some problems for stage design, though, so we're just working through some final details before announcing how it will all work.

Well the obvious 3 gun rifle of choice has been banned by the Turd Reich but there are still other decent options.

That is, until Emperor Trudeau and his band of idiots ban them too.

Hi Everyone,

This is going to be a pretty long update, but it contains important information, so please read the entire thing.

As I mentioned in the last email, the 2020 season will resume in July. We are implementing several measures to keep the match in compliance with current guidelines for COVID-19. Several changes are being made to deal with the firearms ban announced on May 1st, 2020, and there are several rule changes that were going to be put in place before the coronavirus and ban issues occurred.

COVID-19
The following COVID-19 measures are currently being put in place:

1) Reduce maximum attendance to 50 people, as per government guidelines.
2) Shared firearms must be sanitized between shooters.
3) Physical distancing of 2 meters is required at all times. This will include during setup and teardown. Masks are to be worn inside sea cans, since they are enclosed spaces.
4) ROs and scorekeepers must wear masks, as maintaining physical distancing from the shooter, and each other, will not be possible 100% of the time.
5) Payments will be electronic only. A Square with tap will be available to take match fees and collect payments for hats and/or stickers.
6) Shared surfaces, such as timers and scoring tablets, will be sanitized between users.
7) Gloves are recommended when handling props for setup, teardown, or resetting between shooters. If gloves are not worn, hand sanitizer must be used immediately after working with shared items.
8) A minimal number of people will drive the Kubota. Surfaces will be sanitized between drivers, and no passengers will be permitted.
9) Anyone who is feeling unwell is asked to remain at home. There will be no penalties for cancellations. Please don't come to the match if you are sick. If you are sick, or need to cancel, please give as much notice as you can so we can give your spot to someone else.

These procedures will be enforced with zero tolerance. Failure to adhere to government regulations could result in the range being fined, shut down, or both.

New Divisions
Obviously, the firearms ban announced on May 1st, 2020 has a massive impact on our sport. Many of us have lost the ability to use one or more firearms that we previously depended on to participate. In order to counteract the ban, new divisions are being added to the CDTSA 3-Gun rule book. We now have the following divisions:

Unlimited
Practical
Unlimited Pistol-Calibre Carbine (PCC)
Practical Pistol-Calibre Carbine (PCC)
Unlimited Classic Semi-Auto
Practical Classic Semi-Auto
Unlimited Bolt-Action
Practical Bolt-Action
Unlimited 2-Gun
Practical 2-Gun
Just For Fun (JFF)

The first 2 divisions are the same divisions we have had in previous years. Anyone still able to use applicable firearms is encouraged to use these divisions.

The PCC divisions permit the use of a pistol-calibre carbine in place of a rifle.

The “Classic Semi-Auto” divisions have been created to give competitors with older semi-automatic rifles a level playing field. Examples of applicable rifles are (but not limited to) the SKS, M1 Carbine, M1 Garand, vz. 52/57.

The bolt-action divisions have been created for manually-operated rifles. Any bolt, pump, or lever rifle can be used in these divisions.

The 2-Gun divisions exist for anyone who does not have a usable rifle. It is recommended that anyone who participates in this division be prepared to bring extra slugs for engaging distant targets.

The Just For Fun class is still available for anyone with equipment that doesn’t fall into one of the other divisions.

Additional divisions can be added if there is a demand. Please let me know if there is a division that you would like to see added, and I’ll see what I can do to accommodate.

Rule Updates
Our grounding rules have been changed to match the rest of the 3-Gun world. Firearms may now be grounded with the safety on. Please note that firearms with Glock-style trigger shoe safeties MUST also have their passive safeties in place.

Please review our updated rulebook here: http://www.cdtsa.ca/uploads/1/8/3/3/18330887/cdtsa_3-gun_rules_2020.pdf

Registration
Registration for the match will open at 8PM on June 12th. As always, the first 24 hours are reserved for CDTSA members only. General registration will start at 8PM on June 13th. As always, a wait list will be in effect for any registrations after the government-mandated 50 participants. If you cannot make the match, please do your best to let us know as soon as possible so we can offer your spot to anyone on the wait list.

Jeff
CDTSA Rifle Director

Due to popular demand, I'm happy to announce the addition of Unlimited and Practical .22 rimfire rifle divisions.

Please see the updated rulebook here

I've received some questions about rifles that have been prohibited in the FRT, but were not included in the OIC, such as the ATRS Modern Sporter/Hunter/Varminter, or Maccabee Defense SLR.

It is the position of the board that since these rifles cannot be sold by dealers anymore, they are to be considered prohibited as well. We're not happy about it, but don't really see that there is any other choice at this time.

So even though the FRT is not Law, nor a legal definition, and it is not open or available to the general public, CDTSA is banning firearms from use on CDTSA ranges based on it?
Has the club sought out a legal opinion on the matter from reputable and subject knowledgable, legal council?

The RCMP have a publicly-available copy of the FRT. It's not necessarily up to date, but it's the best information available to people without live access. https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/firearms/firearms-reference-table

You're absolutely correct in saying that the RCMP publish a disclaimer that the FRT is a legal document. Has any reputable legal council given an opinion that it is ok to continue using the affected firearms? Considering the government can't even figure out if they've banned 12 gauge shotguns or not (RCMP says no, CBSA says yes), I think it's fairly straightforward to see why the board is choosing to operate cautiously.

This whole thing is a mess. Nobody likes telling people to not bring their guns to the range.

Hey Everyone,

I've been getting a few questions about the upcoming match, so I figured I'd send out an update so you can all benefit from the answers.

1) Rifle Ammo
This year, we will be not be shooting rifles at steel. That means that any kind of ammo you can shoot out of your rifle will be allowed.

2) Number of Stages
We're expecting to be doing the usual 4 stages.

3) .22 Divisions
The intent of these divisions is to allow the use of a .22 rifle. Pistols are still required to be 9mm Luger or larger (section 9.1.3 in the rules).

4) 2-Gun Divisions
Anyone registered in the 2-Gun divisions should expect to require extra slugs. Expect to use your shotgun in place of your rifle. Birdshot will not be allowed on rifle targets.

5) Prohibited Firearms
As mentioned previously, the board is currently considering anything banned explicitly in the OIC OR in the subsequent FRT updates to be prohibited. This includes AR-15s, Maccabee Defense SLRs, the ATRS Modern Rifle family, Derya MK12s, and many others. Until further notice, these firearms cannot be used at CDTSA facilities.

The RCMP have made a really cumbersome PDF of the public FRT available here: https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/firearms/firearms-reference-table
The Armalytics website (https://armalytics.ca) is much easier to search, so it's probably a better bet for checking on the status of your firearms.

You may find that the upcoming match is not as polished as what you've come to expect from us. Between COVID and the bans, it's a challenging time to hold a 3-Gun match. July will be a pretty big experiment for us, so while we are doing our best to figure everything out ahead of time, it's almost guaranteed we'll miss something. Please remember that everyone is just trying to find a way to enjoy 3-Gun any way we still can.

Keep the questions coming!
-Jeff

Hey Everyone,

Here's the round count for this weekend's match:

Pistol: 42
Rifle: 32
Shotgun: 50
Slug: 2

Total: 126

There are a couple of important things to note:
- You should make sure you have a way of carrying a large number of shotgun shells with you for a single stage. You will need to carry a minimum of 29 shot shells on one of the stages.
- Anyone shooting one of the 2-Gun classes should bring significantly more slugs (at least 16 more than listed here), or be prepared to make long-distance pistol shots.

As always, these numbers are the bare minimum required to complete the match. Always bring way more ammunition than listed here.

We're still required to observe COVID-19 regulations, so please make sure you also bring masks and hand sanitizer and observe physical distancing while on site.

Fun match! I shot it Saturday after helping with set up. You guys are going to have a good time today. Kudos to the stage designers.

Auggie D.
