2020 Waterfowl Thread

I finally got out in the field yesterday (solo hunt). It was a bitter-sweet hunt...............had my limit of 8, however, within 30 minutes. As I was picking-up the dead geese, many attempted to land in my decoys. I witnessed geese still landing in the field when I was leaving. The shotgun is: Fabarm XLR5 semiauto, 12 gauge, 3", 28" barrel. Goose blind: homemade with chicken wire, 2x2 posts, and palm leaf grass.

Does the "first sniff" of a goose count?

Our new Drahthaar pup Egon is just 4 months old & the darn goose was just about half his size, lol!

Cheers
Jay

Broke down and bought a migratory lic just now. Last couple days breaking sloughs with geese flying 20' over the tractor got me.

Now watch, I'll dig out some dek's, set up and they'll be a mile away, lol.

(Had some feeding today maybe 50 yds from the tractor, completely unconcerned.)

Heading to Sask in 2 weeks can't wait ,no opener here until October pic from 2 years ago..

Been a great season so far. There is almost nobody else out hunting. I have heard shots only twice and being off work until november both my hunting partner and I have been chasing birds every day. There is no outfitters working our area this year as they didn't get any Canadian clients and of course no Americans are allowed across the border to hunt. It has been very interesting to say the least. Backroads are quiet with nobody out scouting. The only traffic is farm equipment and the odd oilfield truck. Its amazing how much the lack of traffic and hunters changes the wildlifes habits. Seeing alot more deer and even whitetails are not running at the sight of a slowing truck allowing us to get pics. The waterfowl hunting has been superb with no pressure and birds migrating in almost daily. Even with my blind looking like crap due to not being able to find any dead grass when I got it ready birds are still piling in feet down.

Awesome pics guys, Damn Spank you really make me want to move out west.

Were we goose hunt, We always have houses or roads that hinder our set up, Always gotta have perfect wind so we can face away from houses, Or we are set up to shoot crosswind/wrong wind which isn't as nice.

Iknow how it feels not to mention all the other hunters in the area educate the birds here pretty quickly

I was out a few days ago and never seen or heard other hunters or outfitters..................... case in point, it's like that every year. I believe that I had the whole county to myself, and then some. Quality bird and big game hunting in Alberta and Saskatchewan, a paradise for hunters, we are fortunate!

The weather must be bad up north the last couple of days... I was at a grandsons moto-cross race last night and had easily 10,000 birds fly over at very high altitude heading south, waves of them, one after the other. because of the moto cross bike noise I couldn't hear them so don't know if they were speckles or Canada's, just big V's way up there.

So I took a day to do some bird htg, here's my paltry spread:

Now to be fair, those 12 garage sale deke's and my pathetic goose flute calling got me 3 opportunities; I missed, it's that simple. I have no excuse other than my age which I have to rely on heavily, lol. (seriously, 30 yrs ago there'd be geese in the freezer, that's my justification and I'm sticking to it. :) ) One was likely too high, the second, honstly I don't know how I missed, I really don't. Truly, it's kind of embarrassing.

Later got 4 partridge, no chance at a grouse, "should have had" a goose. Was a very fun day. Look close and you can see my, "sittin pail" in the willows. Maybe next time. Forgot how much fun bird hunting is.

Today working sloughs saw a flock of 5 grouse, so they're herding up, EC Sk.

Quick two man limit of ducks this morning. My hunting partner also shot his limit of honkers but I gave the honkers a pass this morning. Birds started pouring in 10 minutes before legal shooting time and were still pouring into the wheat swath after we had picked up, left the field and cleaned our birds. Quite a show!

Nice pics :) hardest part about shooting out west is packing the bloody things in we can't drive into a field lol

Where out west are you hunting? We never have to walk gear in even in swath.

We have sledded gear into pea fields that were too wet to drive in. And we had one late hunt in deep snow, in standing crop, we hauled in gear with sleds. But we can usually drive to our hunt location.

I had a great field lined up for the morning, but when I went out to do my evening check last night, some woman from a neighboring acreage purposely rode her horse through every flock of geese in the field. This morning only three small flocks came in so we only got twelve geese. When I told my partners what had happened last night, they wouldn't believe me until I showed them the horse tracks.
