So..

Ontario Moose hunters, not sure if you have gone through the new draw rules, but I think I found a situation which I'm not sure how it's handled (its not explained in the emails that went out or the website)

What is known:
Since all WMU's are now going for calf allocations, you now need to put into the draw for a calf as well as an adult.
You don't need to have every hunter go into the draw AND purchase a license. (so if you have 8 hunters, and you only want 1 moose, then only one person (highest points) needs to go into the draw ($15) and all hunters need to purchase a license ($35)

BUT.. here are some things I'm unsure if..

1) if you only have 1 hunter going into the draw for an adult, and they don't get an adult tag on the first round (assume all tags a give out in first round).. can that person then go into a second round for a calf? (as they already paid thier $15)
2) if you want to cover your bases, and guarantee a calf (The numbers of hunters going into the calf draw would depend on the # of calf tags buy WMU) , then you need hunters putting in a draw for a calf choice.. if they get one, (first round) does that burn up all thier points on a calf?

these new rules are a bit confusing..

If you apply for a second choice you can choose a new season, new WMU and new moose choice (bull, cow, calf)... there is now the option of THREE choices. If you draw ANY tag, you return to ZERO points. Also, not sure about this one, I don't think you gain points by buying a licence, I think you have to apply for either a tag or apply to the "earn a point" option.

I think you’re right in that you have to apply to get into the draw and if unsuccessful, earn a point.

It is going to be complicated for the first while, but my understanding is you accumulate a point for every year you are not successful. So if you have eight people, why not have all of them apply. If they are unsuccessful, they will still accumulate a point for the next draw. As far as calves go, it is a separate application, so you have to choose between bull, cow or calf.

Not sure how the three choices will work, but in my experience over many years, I have never known anyone to get the second choice in the old system, so I don't hold out much hope.

I'll probably apply for a calf this year, I have zero points, so not much of a chance of getting a tag, but I'm thinking maybe not a lot of guys will apply for calf.

Everyone needs to enter draw to gain points. Only one person has to accept a tag. Even if you don't buy a license, you get the point from the $15 draw entry.

I don't know how your old system worked but it sort of sounds like your new system is similar to how we have been doing things in Alberta.

you can't accumulate points unless you enter the draw, and we have an option to accumulate points and not be drawn (WMU 999 Code)

We recently (as in 3 or 4 years ago) introduced party hunting, before that your tag was yours to fill and there was no group hunting on one tag. It is still a little messy as being in contact with all the members of the group is not well defined.

The system of points works well for an individual and as a group you have to look who has the most / least points and decide who is applying for a tag this year and who is building points for next year.

Like I'm priority 13 or 14 for an antlerless elk, I just need someone who knows where the elk are to offer to take me out hunting ;)

^ similar system. Group members need to be within 3km of the tag holder and either visual or audible contact. Used to be 5km, but I believe it is now 3km.

However it plays out, it’s nice to know that I’ll be helping my dad fill a tag this coming year! Full points from 1993.

Good luck eh! Nice part of having 28 points is you can get a tag in almost any WMU.

I only have 2 points, but my wife has 12.:)

Be interesting to see what point value gets you a tag. I got eight points...no idea how many years to wait to be able to get a tag...

They are not setting required point #'s. It will all depend how many people apply in each wmu, and how many points those people have. Which kind of sucks, because you are applying "blind" so to speak. At least for the 1st year, then after that we can see how many points were needed the previous year.

Depends which WMU you select for the draw. If you select 1, 2 or 3 WMU, you’ll probably get a chance to purchase a tag but with only 8 points you won’t have a chance in the most popular WMU’s.

I drew a tag last year so I start off with zero points and I’ll pay my $15 each year and hope to live long enough to draw a tag someday.

With my dad having full points, and 9 myself, I think I'll wait a few more years until I think about trying to draw a tag to see how many points it will take to draw a bull in my ol' stompin' grounds

You need to apply for the draw ($15) anyway to get points. So you can apply for whatever wmu you would want to hunt. Even if you are successful in the draw, you can decline the tag and keep your points for the next year. If you decline a tag, it goes into the 2nd draw.

I'm going to draw flak for this, but they should allow a group to use their accumulated points to draw an adult tag. ie: If four hunters have 7 points a piece then they get get a tag (assuming that 28 is the magic number) & fall back to zero the next season & the calf tags should go to 2 or more hunters who apply first or lottery. No points required. If there are any remaining tags left over in that WMU they could be dealt out to the single hunters... I haven't moose hunted in the last 10 years because of these goofy rules. I guess I'll stick to deer the next time out.

To the o.p.: Good luck getting a straight answer from the MNR. The last time I talk to someone there they didn't even no who the minster of natural resources was at the time...

^^^ then the groups always get tags and the individuals get shut out because they could never match the point total.

But the whole group resets to zero.

Why are you guys plugging up a decent thread with this sort of stuff. The MNR has a new system for this year and you guys are just muddying up the waters.

You're right, but I'll just be putting into the 99z draw to get my point and then buying the moose hunting license to accompany my dad.
