2021 Wild Turkey thread

Sxs gun my friend. Very quiet. Also 2 chokes. Tight for far out and not so tight for less chance of a miss in close

Yeah I know. I would consider hunting with an o/u some day, but I just love my custom turkey getter. I enjoy using a scope however scopes on nice break actions is like socks with sandals.

Sweet pics, I am encouraged by what I see. hoytcanon, awesome that you got both shotgun and bow. I plan to do the same, potentially. Season opens on Friday, all set to go with my 12 GA. New crossbow should arrive on Tuesday, providing I can zero it in OK I will be using that the next weekend (I took off every Friday for 4 weeks so I can do a day or three of hunting per week).

An Ontario opening day longbeard for my brother in law (and long time hunting partner). He's been dealing with a very serious family medical emergency for the past few months and this was one of the first days he was able to do something for himself. Happily this 21.5 lb longbeard was willing to play along. We struck him around 11:00 AM and sealed the deal at 11:45 AM. He had a hen with him, but topography and curiosity allowed a 32 meter shot to end the hunt.

No luck for myself yet - bird population looks strong though. I've been confined mostly to quick before work hunts thus far with the exception of opening day.

This is my full turkey rig but lately it only attracts coyotes as one is laying out in the field in the distance
I do try to rotate thru different guns though

What did you hit it with and at what distance? Most of my turkey property owners asked me to whack any coyote that I had a chance at, but I would only have 3.5" #6 turkey loads... curious at what distance these would be effective to on coyotes.

Soggy opening day here. Rained all morning, ground was soggy. I did not see or hear anything all morning. I guess the gobblers slept in today.

today was my second day out. All we got was a big goose egg. Figuratively of course.

Same, rained about 2-3 mm per hour from 3 until ... its still going.

Never saw a thing, only ever heard one gobble way off into the yonder. We checked a couple of our different spots and there was no sign or sound anywhere. We weren't expecting much better, but it was a good day to test how long all of our kit would hold up and stay comfortable. Of course the shotgun is now fully disassembled and taking an oil bath.

I doubt they would be very effective at anything over 20 yards, depending on the coyote.

If we are going to tag team Coyotes and Turkey we bring a .223 for the coyote and keep it under a tarp unless needed.

The irony is that I love in a shotgun only for deer area, but if hunting coyotes you can use ANYTHING.

3" federal premium 2oz #6. This shot was around 55 yards if i remember right. I admit i messed up and put the dot on his shoulder like i do with rifles. I still hit him square and he dropped in his tracks but i gave him a 2nd to the head to finish him. Some pellets stopped just inside the hide others penetrated a good way into the chest and neck. I use a custom built wilson precision choke of .650 and its rather long and built for #6 shot. Ive shot many coyotes with #6 shot and its very effective if you have a tightly patterning choke. Generally i aim for the head and neck and they drop fast inside 40 yards its almost guaranteed to drop them. Hard or copper plated shot is best. #4 buck is perfection and what i use when i target coyotes with scatterguns but during the turkey season i use my turkey loads. I killed a big male 2 years ago with 3/4 oz #6 copper plated at 35 yards. First shot to his chest 2nd barrel to his side of face and shoulder as he went running. He made it about 90 yards that was the farthest ive had one run. 2.5" shell with a light payload and not overly tight choke so not ideal but it worked. #4 shot really hits coyotes hard but the higher pellet count in a tighter area seems to work just as well. Especially for facial shots
A test i like to do is shoot 1/4" pine boards. If half the pellets go thru it will kill a coyote. Pattern on them at various distances

Thanks... I shot a few coyotes back in the day, with 3" #2 lead and with a full choke... just was not sure about the lighter #6 shot for distance... I use a .665 choke in my Maxus when hunting turkeys... will probably stick to 40 yards until I see a few drop.
