2022 Whitetail Thread

Got a doe, first day out. Saw another but passed up on the shot. I wasn't confident I could place the bullet where I wanted to. I went with my son-in-law, and tried to give him the best opportunities, but nothing panned out. We were on public lands, 3 full days, late in the season, and I suspect the deer have migrated to safer territory. It was a great experience, I know I went for several years before I got my first deer, but I had hoped he would have it easier. He seemed to take it in stride and we are splitting the deer I took.

Got this guy at the end of the first day of my Alberta trip in November. The photos don't really capture the mass of the antlers but the one circumference on his right side is just shy of 7" and total gross was 164"! Whitetail was supposed to just be an add on tag for my mule deer draw, but when a buck like this peeks his head out, you listen to your hunter host and lean into him. I hit him three times at 330 yards with my cousin's 28 Nosler and 162 ELD-X Hornady Precision Hunter factory ammo (I know...factory ammo...ewww!!!)

Now to decide on a pose for the shoulder mount that I didn't budget for!

I've had a hunting license for almost a decade but have never been out. Although I love to fish, hunting was never something I experienced and I didn't know where to start. Finally met a friend who is an avid hunter and he's taken me "under his wing" and has been a great mentor. I got my first deer tag this year, and last week got a small buck just outside of London ON with a crossbow borrowed from my friend. I'm really looking forward to enjoying some venison this winter and already can't wait to do this next year!

I found a piece of someones arrow and broad head in mine this year. I'm guessing the arrow was from a year ago at least based on the amount of tissue grown around the pieces. A little seven point went about 150 dressed.

Every time I gut one I worry about something like that. Have heard a few stories of people cleaning deer and getting cut bad by a broadhead lodged in their deer. I hunt an area where few seem to be hunting archery and I am the only one hunting on 8 adjoining fenced off quarters of land but you never know?

My buddy said he found a broad head in his deer's hind quarters when he was skinning it. Just nicked him when he found it. Not that you ever expect to find one but I sure wouldn't expect to find one in the hind quarters.

Felt the shaft in the rib cage when I was dressing the deer but i didn't realize what it was until I was skinning it. I found the tip and two of the blades just under the skin behind the shoulder. found the other blade when cutting up the deer. It looked like the tip of the broad head hit something hard, pushing it back into the aluminium section that held the blades, causing the blades to separate from the broad head.

Had one day to hunt on my folks land in the Qu'Appelle valley.

Weather was just about perfect, about 8 below, a steady breeze from the NW and falling snow.

Second season out with the Ruger Ranch Rifle in 223, its a light round so I pick my shots very carefully. Had a couple chances earlier in the day but passed because of it not being an ethical shot.

My technique is a slow walk through the bush and hope to see them before they see or smell me. I am very familiar with the terrain and the typical game funnels so there is some method to my madness. Anyway, saw movement and the falling snow obscured me from his vision so got ready. He passed into an open area at about 60 yards and the 62 grain Federal Fusion broke a shoulder and took out a lung. He went about 30 yards and expired.

Already have him in the freezer.

A buddy of mine has the skull cap/ racks of all the bucks he's shot in his barn/ office and I noticed one had an arrow sticking out of it. He said when he went to cut the cap out the saw kicked sparks and he found a broad head in the deer's skull healed over. Said the deer was moving normal before he shot it and he screwed an arrow shaft into the broadhead before putting it on wall for effect. I'll see if he will text me a picture for everyone that's thinking " cool story bro" lol.

Nice buck! Great story, thanks for sharing.

In Quebec we legally need to use a 243 as a minimum caliber. I always wondered how each province comes up with such different rules.
Nice buck, that looks like a lot of good meat.

Wow! The mass on that thing. Almost palmAted. Congrats on a beast!

The palmation is crazy. 6 ⅞" around that one spot.

BUM!! Now that is an impressive buck!!

I could see that he was cool but couldn't see how cool until he was down. He's not a classic 5x5, but I guarantee that most people would walk past a clean typical mount to look at one with some character.

Moat hunting laws are not derived from science but emotion.
Blood trailing dogs, hunting big game with hounds minimum caliber ( or even cartridge shape length) baiting , depending on where you go , all are either detested or welcomed by particular hunters .
Science, logic and actual experience has very little to do with any of the laws that are in place .
The .223 is a prime example - legal in some provinces, completly illegal in others .

Finally managed to upload the pics to my PC
