2022 Wild Turkey Thread

My hunting partner for the day woke up with sore throat, fever, chills, aching muscles and headache. Turkey fever? Laugh2 needless to say, I'm setting up solo today. Good luck out there.

A little bit more wind today, but that should help with keeping the mosquitoes. Usually the damn mosquitoes don't show up for a few weeks. They are out early this year

No gobbling so far this morning, but someone just let off a shot in the distance.

Good luck everyone!

No birds today, just 2 ticks. On the drive back found a few good waterfowl spots on public land. One holsing lots of mallards, the other holding geese. Not a complete bust.

My daughter woke up at 345am with a fever and sore throat so i stayed home with her today. My buddy went and blasted a nice tom in the face. I may try and afternoon hunt solo

Got it done with the Mathews this morning. Very exciting hunt. Bird came in quiet from the side I least expected (of course)...took him 20 minutes to move 4 yards and give me an unobstructed shot...then when he got there, he spent 5 more minutes facing me before finally turning to give me a chance to get the bow up and draw. From the time I saw him till the time I shot him he never let his fan down. Beautiful big bird. I don't have an accurate scale to give a weight but for reference, my bow is 31.5" ata.

so Covid has screwed my plans yet again

Normally i set up my blind 2-3 weeks before opening day
Normally i am in the blind before the sun comes up

Neither of these things can happen this year because - reasons....

If I'm not going to get there till 9:30 am earliest and i dont have a blind (just a gilley net and camo clothes) is it even worth hunting?
and im not even sure ill be able to find the decoys

Or should I just do the 100 other chores I have lined up and go for a good ATV ride?

I had one bust me from the roost on my way in and flew off. don't know if it was a hen or a tom. Had one gobbling 40 yards to my right but might have seen me. Had two about 200 yards behind me gobbling. The one to my right eventually flew down and immediately headed towards the others back into the bush. About 20 minutes later BOOM!!! Guess the neighbour got one. Stayed for another couple hours but everything stayed silent. I'll be back out Friday.

Good luck all.

Hunting is always worth it. And by the sounds of things in your life at the moment, you probably need it more than most. Everyone is different but for me, 3 hours of hunting is better than 9 good hours on the atv. As always, ymmv.

I've killed plenty of birds and never once have I sat in a blind. I like the option of being able to move if I need to. I've found that killing birds off of the roost first thing in the morning is the easiest. But I've also called in and killed lots of birds after the first "3 hours" once they are done breeding the hens that they are with and start looking for that new one that they are hearing. If it was me, I'd be going out and getting after it.

I hear you, very similar situation here. I seriously threw out my back a few weeks ago, been bed ridden ever since.
Opening day is tomorrow. I haven't done any of my pre-hunt preparation. Just started walking again without screaming in pain.
I had already booked the time off work, and reserved the cottage for a long weekend, so I am heading up today anyway.
Our hunting hours are only from sun-up to noon, so already limited, and I really doubt I can get out early with all the gear, so I will likely wait for around 9 and try my best with a very minimal setup (crossbow, camo, seat pad).
Getting them off the roost is probably best, but they are moving around during the day so, realistically, your chances are just as good at 6:00 AM as they are at 9:00 AM... right time, right place, etc.

You don't need a blind. You don't need decoys. Just find a good spot where you know there are some birds and set up against a big tree.

Lots of jakes and toms around this year. Got some great videos but can't seem to post them here.

I just got to the cabin and went straight to the game cams.
Had a heck of time finding them... one tree fell, and the other camera was set too high. I saw a lot of tips of heads, but only a few good shots.
This one looks like he's peeking at the camera.

That gives me hope for tomorrow morning. I will be out there at 5:00 and wait for them to come in. I'm really hopeful this year, 2nd time and still no kills, but I sure enjoy being out there and seeing critters and hearing life... its relaxing, all be it cold still.
