The shoot is under way in Brandon, MB. Today marks the start of the championship events. Preliminaries were held Wed-Thurs- Friday and some really good scores have been posted. Wednesdays singles saw three shooters tie for winner with 100 straight apiece and Thursdays singles saw eight shooters tie with 100 apiece! Other events shooters posted scores as high as 98 from the 27yd line in handicap and doubles scores as high as 99. Quite a field of competition this year. Work schedule put a wheel in the spokes for attending this year. Hopefully we can make next years in Vancouver.

Alberta was well represented in the top scoring shooters!

Yes it sure was. These are the names of shooters I personally know who brought home hardware. There may be others whose names I don't recognize? MB had the strongest presence with 33 shooters but AB was not far behind at 29, SK-21, ONT-12, Atlantic Provinces-8, BC-3 and North Dakota 5 for a total of 111 entries this year.

If the Canadians, held in the middle of the country, only had 111 shooters, I guess I shouldn't feel so bad about the turnout for our shoot in Castor this year.

Attendance is down everywhere. Have you looked on some gun dealers websites lately and seen how many used high grade target guns there are listed for sale? With costs these days alot of shooters are packing it in. I haven't figured out why on ammo the average cost is about $20-$30 more per flat in the west than the east? I've never understood that one? It can't be shipping cost when the mileage from factories in the US is almost identical distance to major centres east or west. Then throw in the travel costs to go to a shoot for a weekend plus rising costs and target # requirements and you've virtually eliminated the blue collar worker or pensioner on a fixed income. As well the average shooter at most shoots these days is those who are at an age they are past the family raising years and many of them are aging out of the game.

I shot on the same squad as Lynn and Jesse Smith and Don Stevens in FSJ this spring. Those guys certainly get around.

Trapshooting Jesse told me is his only hobby. He said he doesn't fish, hunt, golf etc. so it's all out on trap. They travel alot to shoots all over Canada and the US and he said the Canadians is the one shoot he will never miss each year regardless of where it's held. My wife and I are putting in our best effort to attend in Vancouver next year.

I recognize that I’ve been off the circuit for years but….BC ( and two places in Alberta) was always PITA country, the rest of Canada shot ATA. If the Nationals will be shot at Vancouver, which rule book will they follow?

Last year the Canadians were held in Calgary, this year Brandon, and next year Vancouver. I thought the Canadians alternated, East then West. What's happening in the East?

My understanding is the Canadians will be shot as a pita event, and there will be no ata trophies.

The CTA website shows the 2024 Canadians in Vancouver will be a PITA shoot with cross registration for ATA shooters, last I heard was that if you are not a PITA member you will have to buy a PITA membership.

Well that will be a PITA expense for a one time deal...notice the play on acronyms I threw in there?!! :p Maybe I can join now while I'm here on the Island and register the rounds I'll shoot tomorrow at the Nanaimo Club.
