After 12 years of putting in for BC LEH, I finally drew a moose tag as part of a group this year (2 tags for the group) !
We hunted around Nazko, BC and the group filled its 1st tag in the 1st hour of the 1st day.
I harvested my 1st moose ever on the 1st hour of the 2nd day. Forest fires burned a large part of that area a couple years ago and it now seems pretty good for moose. In 2 days we saw about 10 of them. Lots of signs of them all over the area.
If we didn't see 100 muley does, we didn't see one. Not many bucks though, and none of us saw any 4 pt bucks.
Saw a handful of whitetail does, no bucks.
There are black bears all over the place. Saw a beautiful cinnamon phase bear and one large (7ft) black bear but cargo space was too limited to harvest them.
I spent some time in Vanderhoof and PG the week prior with the CAF for the BC wildfires and we had some Rangers tasked with 'predator defense.' I still can't believe how many black bears are in that area of BC. I saw at least a few dozen in a week. There was even one by the armory directly in Prince George.
We spotted 3 cows on a hill and walked over and started calling. In under 10 minutes, 2 bulls silhouetted on the top of the hill at about 370 yards. My friend continued calling them in as I set up to take the shot. I took the shot on the larger one at 188 yds.
This moose was harvested with a Browning BLR stainless takedown in 358 win, which is my go to rifle. Bullet was a 225gr sierra gameking at 2500fps, which mushroomed perfectly. 1st shot was broadside to the front shoulder which stopped him, and a 2nd shot head on to the boiler room flipped the bull onto his back with all four legs in the air. Less than 5lb of lost meat.
Field dressing, quartering and packout was 5hrs. We figure there's about 800lb of meat between the 2 moose after processing. It filled an 15cu ft chest freezer and 2 marine coolers.
