2023 Waterfowl Thread

I suspect waterfowling may become a longterm pursuit. It combines some of my favorite elements of fishing and big game hunting.

What's the rules for a BC resident to hunt waterfowl in Alberta? Does one have to go with an outfitter or can a person just buy a AB hunting lic.?

Just purchase your non-residence certificate, game bird and migratory license, then you're on you're way. Conduct some research, do some scouting, telephone calls, etc.
Saskatchewan is the same, just purchase the certificate, game bird and migratory. Always good to check with the provincial game wardens, incase there have been some changes. Kyle, Saskatchewan is an awesome place for migratory hunting, lots and sandhill cranes too. Best of luck!

Thank you sir for the info. :)

My season officially ended today. I was able to get out a few times over the last couple weeks with fellow CGN’r Cintax, but we never got on a ton of action on the ducks we were targeting. We saw a lot of birds but didn’t get a lot of shooting in. Apparently we were on a shell budget that neither of us anticipated. With today’s excellent weather, I made my way out to the lake one last time. Came out with a limit of bufflehead and a bonus drake mallard. A fast pace and quick diver hunt is always a nice way to end the season.

Nice looking bunch of Buffleheads. See lots of them on the larger sloughs out here but haven't shot one since leaving Ontario. Don't own a single water decoy, pair of waders or a duck boat any longer...:)

As much as I love hunting on the water, I don't think you are missing out on much!! I think I’d much rather be in the fields. I usually don't do dedicated diver hunts as I don’t really enjoy eating them. The only exception are buffleheads. I find them to be palatable but they are so fun to hunt because of how fast they are. I usually get out after the mallards at first light and if nothing is happening, I switch to buffleheads just to finish of the day. Getting a limit on buffleheads is not challenging so I try to add some excitement by targeting only drakes. At least that way, the hunt has the potential to last longer than 30 mins. Buffleheads decoy extremely well and they tend to fly in circles once the shooting starts. Sometimes it’s challenging keeping your gun loaded when you have cripples swimming away and new birds flying in.

Now that the waterfowl season is done, its time to pull out the SxS and get after upland and small game!

Finally managed to get out for a field hunt this past Sunday. I havent shot any birds since shooting cormerants in September. Where does the time go?? We had a slow start but ended up with 20 ducks, mostly mallards but a couple blacks. Also shot 16 geese but the freezing rain turned the spread into glazed donuts so we pulled the pin.IMG_9806[1].jpgIMG_9804[1].jpg
