2024 Wild Turkey Thread

Not quite the bird I was hoping to bag, but no chance I was passing on this guy when I got a look at his spurs through my binoculars. He was a cautious bird that got hung up at 35 yards and was content staying at that range for far too long. When I got the impression that he was likely going to be on his way out, I ended up taking a shot through some brush that I really wish I didn’t have too, but that couldn’t be avoided. He eventually did get to within about 30 yards albeit he put himself in some cover which made for a bit of a risky shot. Fortunately, his head was all I needed to have clear vision of and he dropped in his tracks.

21.5lbs
10.5” beard
1 5/8” x 1 9/16” spurs

And the Hoyt inspired spur chamber photo….

Very nice bird, Alvaro! Congrats... good luck on tag #2... I am neck deep in bears now, so doubt I will get back out again.

Two Toms from Quebec.

I am recovering from an open heart surgery (Ross procedure and replacement of ascending aorta) and I'm glad I was in good shape enough to hunt. 24 days after surgery I was able to walk 3 km/day scouting for turkey around the house.

Winchester SXP Long Beard shotgun, Carlson's Long Beard XR choke and, of course, Winchester 3" Long Beard XR #4 ammo.

First bird was shot at 38 yards, on day 43 post op, the other one at 45 yds on day 50.

Second bird had a tough life. I found old number 6 shot under his skin, and his head and snood's skin were having necrosis probaly because they frost last winter.

FYI, 6 weeks after surgery, your sternum in considered healed.

18 and 20 pounds, both 8" beard and 3/4-7/8 hooks.

Life is good.

Quick guide job this morning.

This fella is from Slovakia and it's been a long time dream of his to hunt wild turkeys. We had an epic hunt this morning with lots of gobbling and he pulled the trigger at 6:45 on this nice two-year-old.

That’s awesome. I have way more enjoyment calling in birds for others than harvesting one myself. I’ve been given orders from the bride to bring home a bird so I guess I’ll have to get out and see if I can stay in the good books. I love the pics of those birds with giant spurs. I have a few set of hooks but most birds in my area don’t live long enough to grow that big. There is high predator mortality with all the yotes and bobcats, fishers etc. That’s just my opinion. Congrats everyone

I'm the same, I'd much rather call for someone else. Especially a newish hunter. I've killed my fair share and it's anti-climatic now, pulling the trigger.

The season has been a bit of a challenge but this morning the turkey gods smiled upon me and I was blessed with this big beauty.

The GoPro footage isn't great, and I should have let them play a bit before pulling the trigger to get some better footage, but with bear camp a few days away I wasn't going to mess around :)

If anyone is looking for a handy piece of kit, my gal sells these turkey totes for $25 shipped.
Various colors. American 550 paracord.
