It's a great day for a Service Conditions update for the ORA. Dave and I will be running the Service Conditions program again this season for the ORA with help from our regular cast of characters.
The ORA has decided to hold a Service Conditions provincials long weekend in September. Registrations will be opening soon.
We have one requested and are starting to get booking confirmations for 1 Service Pistol match, 4 Service Rifle matches, and 5 Precision Rifle Matches.

Hey dink27, what is the COF nowadays for SR? Just about all semi-auto rifles are now prohibited. What can we bring to the matches? I'm guessing it's the COF that we used for the No4Mk1's in the past?

The old NSCC/ CAFSAC matches are still doable with a straight pull.

In 2024 a few of us developed a new ORA course of fire to prepare for NSCC. It was further refined over two matches in 2025. It has all the essential elements for Service Rifle, and we find it is more fun (because lots of movers), it flows nicer (snap, rapid, mover, run down), uses fewer targets with easy swaps from 4ft frames to hand helds, and it is fast shooting. Instead of snap shooting at 500 its deliberates, so people can get feedback for wind. We can do the whole thing in a day with 2 relays. It's possible to do well with a straight pull, we've seen some traditional bolt actions and the timing is a little tight but still doable. Remington or Savage rifles with detachable mags seem more popular than Enfeilds. Enfeilds are still useable. The whole match is 115 rounds.

Ontario Provincial Service Conditions Championship Results​

Our first year of holding a Provincial Service Conditions Championship went very well. The weather was good for 5 consecutive days. There were no units in the Range Training Area over the long weekend. Competitors came from as far as Vancouver Island BC, Nova Scotia, and Michigan. Special thanks go out to all of our amazing volunteers without whom the matches would not have been possible. Note that the Scores below are the total number of points, where the number after the decimal is the number of V Bulls used for breaking ties. The Match % is calculated as a percentage of the highest recorded score, not the highest possible score. Electronic scoring with Practiscore was mostly a success, further refinements will be needed to smooth out the scoring for

Precision Rifle​

For the two day Precision Rifle event a huge congratulations to Daryl S. and Craig S for finishing in 1st place for Team Shooting Pair with a score of 765 and 71 V's. For Second Place Congratulations to Jeremy M and Larry W with a score of 748 and 61 V's. And to Dave E and Andrew V for 3rd with a score of 727 and 44 V's.
For top shooting score Daryl S with a score of 386 and 39 V's over 8 matches and two days of shooting, only dropping 14 points total over those two days, very impressive.

Service Rifle​

Service Rifle with the ORA is finally making a comeback after the COVID pandemic and the banning of many common semi-automatic sporting rifles. Some competitors are embracing modern straight pull designs, or adapting lightweight precision or hunting rifles, while others are returning to vintage military surplus rifles. The updates and refinements to the ORA Service Rifle course of fire over the last couple of years have made for a fast paced, challenging match, with a great mix of snap, rapid, deliberate, and moving targets.

Service Pistol​

Having enough competitors to run 3 relays made for a very long and tiring day for everyone. We shot 17 of 19 stages and expended over 300 rounds of ammo per person. To finish on time we decided to forgo match 38 FBI Qualification Series B, and Match 40 Last One Standing. The Royal Canadian Military Institute's Pistol Club made a strong showing.
After looking at scores and high possibles I think we will change the scoring to use Figure 11s V, 5, 4, 3 instead of 5,4,3,2. Clearly using the Figure 11’s with such a small 5 was far too challenging. Some people that are used to other Service Conditions matches noted the difference of using Figure 11 targets, but our operating costs were substantially less and keeps the targetry consistent between all 3 disciplines. Expect a change to scoring in the future to encourage more HPS.

Six competitors attended all three disciplines, shooting for five consecutive days. Four of our valiant competitors were also at Range Control every day to sign for the range and attend the daily safety briefing, then took turns acting as range safety officers to allow others to compete.
