I am using H4895 working up a load for my 204 HOGG. I am up to 30grs and it fills the case, no pressure yet, 4200 fps. I need a powder that will take up less room in the case so I can see how high I can go.
Look up loads for IMR 4198. I have not used it in my 204 however max loads are usually less than other powders which will give you a bit more capacity.
Failing that, use a ball powder like BL-C(2) or Win 748 or use a tube extension for your H4895 and pour it in slowly so that it settles and allows for more powder in the same amount of space.
I have loaded IMR4198 in all my rifles EXCEPT 204 and don't ask me why...just haven't gotten around it yet, I guess!
IMR 8208 XBR is a touch faster than H4895 and Benchmark faster still, both would take up less room in the case. Varget is way slower and 4198 is a lot faster, I wouldn't use that. Keep in mind though you are getting good velocity as it is and cases that are filled to the max or slightly compressed tend to give the best accuracy and we should take accuracy over velocity any day. If I were to pick one powder to try this experiment it would be Benchmark IF it gives you the accuracy.
Jim.
I`ve been using h322 in my 204, the first was a rem sps varmint. It got .5 to .75 in. groups with 32 gr. sierra. my current tikka t3 lite isn`t as good. I will be trying 4198 and varget soon.
I use Benchmark with 32 Bergers in Nosler brass. On the few days when I can't keep them all in the same hole at 100, I get all pouty.
The load will usually hold 1/2 MOA out to 500 yards in consistant wind conditions. Gaillard did a great job on this one.
My "go to" powder for the 204 Ruger is H4895. Others that I have found useful are RL10X and W748. Looking forward to trying some of that new IMR 8208 XBR.
