Looking at purchasing a rem700 in 204 for some gopher medicine. Have been talkin to a few guys who reload theirs and they can't seem to reproduce the velocities of factory ammunition. Anyone out there having the same problems or have found a solution to said problem? If I can't reproduce those numbers I'll stick to another caliber. Take er easy fellas.

My current load is 26.6 grains of H322, Hornady brass, CCI primers and 32 grain V-Max bullets. I have averaged 3996 fps with this combination, this from a 26" barrel.

This is about halfway between the maximum load (27.5 grains) and the recommended starting load (25.5 grains) for this bullet weight. I tested loads up to maximum (no signs of pressure) but accuracy was best at 26.6 grains so I chose that for my varminting choice. I only recently got a chrony so I don't know what sort of velocity the max loads would have yeilded.

Its below the factory claim if 4225 fps but as with most factory claims this is a bit optimistic. I only measured one factory round and it was 4095 fps but on a cold winter day, maybe summer would be closer to the claimed velocity.

I wouldn't get to concerned if you can't duplicate factory velocities. I just did a quick calculation and with a 200 yard zero at 300 yards bullet drop is 4.7" for my 3995 fps load vs 4.13 with factory 4225 fps. I will gladly give up a bit of velocity to get better accuracy.

Don't let this deter you from a .204, it is a great cartridge for gophers. Recoil is light enough to watch bullet strikes in scope, and you truly want to see the bullet hit:D (see video in my signature)

Its also a surprisingly accurate round, despite being long and skinny (the opposite of the PPC and BR cases) it seems to show inherent accuracy.

Here is a link to powders used in the .204.

Hornady factory ammo is like KFC.....11 secret herbs and spices. They're powder recipe isn't for public knowledge. I reload for my .204 and to be honest, I backed off my velocities to extend my barrel life.
I heard that burning factory ammo velocities (Hornady 32gr Vmax is 4250fps)consistantly will give you about a 1200 round barrel lifespan.
I load 27gr of H4895 behind my 32gr Vmax bullets and get a smidge under 3900fps. And my gophers STILL explode in a pink nuclear cloud. :D I could probably back off the load even more (26gr would be just a tad over 3700fps)...save powder and the barrel.

My 204 doesn't have a lot of rounds through it but still not near "factory" numbers. The more I shoot 204 the more I am impressed with what a 223 will do. YMMV

+1

Buy a Remington Varminter .222. Bed the action, fix the trigger, float the barrel and shoot 1/2 MOA with decent hand loads for 10+ years with the same barrel. That’s just my humble opinion.

You cannot replicate the Hornady factory loads' velocity. They use a proprietary powder that is unavailable to the public.

I can get up to 4000fps with the 32gr VMax, so losing 200fps give or take is only 5%. Like someone said, the gopher still makes red mist :D
