I have been seriously thinking about buying a 204 Ruger No 1 varminter.

Does anybody have anything to say about the 204 ruger round or the ruger no 1 rifle?

A .204 is on my list of must haves. Excellent accuracy, great range, and pretty much no recoil...it's a sweet little cartridge.

As for the Ruger No. 1, they're great rifles. I don't think you'll hear many negatives about them.

Now stop thinking and go buy one!!

This may seem like a stupid question. But how is the .204 for noise? My 22-250 seems to make the locals a little "restless".

the 204 sounds very similar to my 222. it doesn't seem to have the loud crack like the 250.

since i got my 204 i havn't shot my 222, people i know have 22-250's just gathering dust aswell.

I can't help you with the 204 but I had a no 1 varmitter for a while. Loved the gun but I bought the stainless laminate version and never warmed up to the stock. (Buddy said it looked like plywoood, and I had to agree) Eventually I sold it but it was by no means my first and definately not my last no 1. I am also torn between another 223 abd the 204. If I didn't have so much 223 brass and bullets I would probably go the 204Route. Let us know what you decide.

why not a tikka .204 varminter?
Because the Ruger no 1 is a Finely crafted, Classy Rifle and Dam nice to look at.
The Tikka is..........plastic:runaway:

smak_daddy,
I had a No 1V, shot great...sold it at a weak moment and regret it ever since:rolleyes: The 204 sure has a loyal following and appears to do all it promises, have fun:cool:

Laminate is glorified plywood.

i just bought the tikka stainless varmint in 22-250 and love it, i did a lot of research as i was trying to decide between the 204 and 22-250, i found that the 204 has limited killing power wen shot in excess of 300-350 yds, i got this info from people who own and have lots of experience with both rounds

I have both. I much prefer the 204 - quiet like my 222, recoil is nil and it's easy to spot your hits even at high magnifications, and I get twice as many shots between 'cool downs.' I rather suspect I'll be selling my 22-250 next year. The trajectory is so similar between the two that it's not worth mentioning, both in terms of drop and drift.

Just about any caliber can let you down from time to time (or more likely the shooter, most times) when taking long range shots at a small tough target like a coyote, but beyond this, I suspect that people who profess "limited killing power" in the .204 probably aren't using the best bullets for predators. IMHO, the .204 is quite capable of taking coyotes out to 400 yards when using the 35 gr or 40 gr Berger bullets, or the 45 gr Hornady soft point. Do a search on the Predator Masters forum, and you will find evidence of a coyote taken at 382 yards using a 35 gr Berger and an AR rifle.

The 204 with 40 grain bullets has plenty of power beyond 300 for small animals. I have taken coyotes out to past 500 yards on a few occasions. They are deadly. I have never failed to kill them in a single shot (I've missed however...) .

It is such an incredibly flat shooting round as well. I also use it for gopher hunting - a plain jane remington 700 ADL.

I am going to purchase one of the Savage long range precision varminters in 204 as soon as the local shop gets one in. I am totally in love with the round. My wife has adopted the ADL for her barn gun to slay the hairy bastards that go for her chickens and turkeys.
