.204 vs .223

Well Tiger we got the same coyotes you do and your right they are bigger and tougher and a 60 pound dog can soak up a lot more energy than a 35 pounder.
I have used everything including shotguns on coyotes and over the years I used a .243 with good success. A few years back I gravitated towards the .270 with 130gr and 140 gr bullets. The heavier big game style bullets would invariably shoot through but without the explosive exit holes that occurred frequently with varmint style bullets at close range. And at longer range they would retain enough energy to still enable clean kills.
Most recently I started using a 25WSSM with 110 accubonds.... deadly on coyotes at 400+ yards. One hole in and one hole out... four stitches is the norm. My next experiment is gonna be with a .204.... I don't really have much trust in this as a coyote round... but I intend to give it a good shakedown.
I have a couple of friends in Newcastle that are using the .223WSSM with awesome results at extreme range. I have heard that the .243WSSM is the best of the Super Shorts for long range work on coyotes and wolves!
If you do get one keep us informed.... I would like to hear more reports on the .223WSSM.

Thanx BIGREDD

The only fella I know that has a 223 WSSM is from Newcastle and he told me he is extremely pleased with its performance at the range. If I am correct, he only uses it at the range and he doesn't use it for hunting - but I could be wrong. Maybe he is one of the guys you know. Send me a PM.

Please let me know if you get any results with the 204 on coyotes. I'd be very interested in what you have to say. I may just buy an older 22-250 for this year. Once I get my feet wet and I'm hooked on yote hunting, I'll invest in something newer for next fall. I like the idea of the 204 as it is somewhat unique.

As far as the 243, the 270, etc., for coyotes, I don't think you are allowed to use anything over 223 here in NB. The only times we can use anything above 223 is during bear, deer and moose seasons. Other than that, we are SOL. If I'm wrong, I'm sure one of our other NB CGN members will correct me.

Thanx.

Newcastle Ontario... I forgot you have one of them in NB too!
And I did not realize you had a caliber restriction in your area either. Well now I see why you are interested in the .223WSSM!

Yeah, we HAD one, but it is now part of the combined City of Miramichi.

Some of the negative I've heard on the 223 WSSM is short barrel life and over-blown claims on velocity.

Any thoughts?

One of my buddies has shot a mess of coyotes with a .17 Remignton, but switched last year to a .204 and just thinks it is grand!:)
However, he still insists on his .223 when he has to get way out there, because of thee bullet availability , and thhe twist in his .223 Musgrave (1:8)
