.204 ????

You know what? I really want to paint one up just like it. Seriously. What a gag that would be to take to the range. I think It's time to actually 'invest' in a Norinco CQB just to try it out on.

It just has to be done... it has to...:D

So who has the best deal on a Norry CQB these days?

I wanna see some hard core CQB shooter like "Hungry" or "doc" go to a match using one of those with a matching pistol!!!!

I would think one of the Sav. bolt guns would work nicely. Price is about right, you can paint to suit. The 223 will be better suited to 600m with the proper twist and bullets. Don`t go the AR route if you want to hunt varmints. Neither cartridge has much recoil, accuracy between the two will boil down to equipment and the shooter.

Deadmeat....Did you just recomend a Savage? Maybe next week you will start liking Fords !!:p:nest:

I never said i didn`t like Sav. rifles, just haven`t bought one yet. Now the Ford thing will not likely ever happen again in this life time. You know what they say about guys who like Fords, keep them away from the sheep.

.204 is good out to about 500 yards, dependant (as usual) a bit on bullet weight, bc and velocity. Past 500 yards, you're looking at less than half the velocity (1/4 the kinetic energy) and significant drop.

Now, a good shot can use it out past there, but I wouldn't call it a good choice for further than a half-kilometer or so.

think a .223 would be better

I want her to be able to shoot at least out to 800m.

Biggest round she will fire is a 22-250. - My old 22-250 I was shooting 40gn noslers and found they were great but only to about 600 and than went a little wonk.
that was a savage 12fv in 12" twist.

The gun she is going to get will be a 12lrpv.
Either the .223 1-7" twist, or the 22-250 1-9" twist.

I want her shooting heaver rounds to make the wind a little more forgiving. Only thing is ive never fired any of the heaver rounds out of a 22-250 in the faster twist.

witch would u want?

LRPV is a good rifle, a fantastic one at the price.

I don't think a .223 is going to be a hell of a lot better than a .204 at 800m. Both are going to have crappy terminal performance (wounded critters and pelt damage) and vertical spread. I might take a .223 over a .204 at 500 yards, but not by a lot.

Edit: 22-250 is also not much good past around 500 yards. With all three of these "varmint" rounds, you've lost 2/3 to 3/4 of their energy by the time they're that far down range, and the low velocity + low weight means they're now very subject to wind drift. In other words, you can hit a coyote but not kill it, and you can kill a gopher but not hit it.

Now, a really good shot with a really good rifle on a really good day can probably still print some nice 3 or 4 inch groups with these things (assuming a fairly heavy bullet and precision reloads) at 800 yards -- but that's not the same as calling them an effective choice for that range.

pure target shooting.

what a tuff choice.

I really like the 12lrpv. pretty much going around this rifle.

the .223 in 7 twist is the better long range round for sure. I just ran some #'s and it held faster than the speed of sound with 90gn burgers longer than the burger 70's did from the 22-250.

Im going to go with the 22-250 however for the bolt face.

I cant expect her to shoot the same distance as me and my friend do right away but she is competitive and I have no dout she will like to at least try. Her biggest fear is kick. Start her with the 22-250 and than maby next year if she wants to ill rebarrel it to a .308.

Go with .204 for the 'she' gun. No recoil, no flinch developing, and a great caliber to start with because the ballistics are as flat as a Liberal's forehead.

Hey now ! I have never been in a serious relationship with a sheep :D

What kind of accurate distance can you get out of a .204 ?

good rifle, hand loads and shooter.

I went out shooting long range with my 204 this past weekend. I ended up shooting 600 yards with out any issue. I shot groups at 4 and 500 yards. Once I got the windage figured out at 600 yards I ran out of bullets.

So the picture shows the groups I shot as well as the MOA I dialed up to get to that distance from my 100 yard zero.

My 500 yard group is under 2.5". Thats under 1/2 MOA at 500 yards with a 39gr bullet.

I don't think that the little 204 will have any problems holding under 1/2 MOA for another few 100 yards.

I was shooting into a 9mph 45 degree head wind.

When I had my girlfriend at my range, she was hesitant to shoot my 223 because it was too loud. I think double ear-protection is a good way to prevent one's SO from being intimidated by centerfire rifles.

On top of that, a 12lrpv is 11 lbs, not counting optics, bipod, etc. I doubt the recoil of a 223 will be too much for a small woman.
