Have been loading barnes Varmint Grenades, but another loader told me they are too light and I shouldn't be shooting anything less than 39 or 40 grain probably Blitz King.
Anyone else got experience with this load???:confused:
 
what is your twist rate????

the important thing is not the weight but the bearing surface vs twist and the varmint grenade because they are not made of lead have a big surface for the weight......

I think they are 26 grainer!!!! they are probably comparable to a 35g bullet to.
 
I tried a box of them in my Savage Model 12 with a 1 in 12 twist. Couldn't get them to shoot at all. Tried a variety of powders, but nothing went below 11/4". Sieirra 39 gr blitzkings go at a 1/2".....Ken
 
I shot a couple of hundred last season. Had to load them to the max to get them to shoot, 29gr Varget, BR4 primers, chrono at 4150, .41"@100 out of my VSSFII 26" HB.

The other loader doesn't know what he's talking about. To my knowledge, all factory .204 Ruger rifles are produced with a 1-in-12 twist. You will almost invariably find that they will shoot the 32 gr and 39 gr bullets very well. Some will shoot the 40 gr bullets well, and some will even shoot the 45 gr Hornady SP bullets.

I have gone the heavier route, shooting 38 gr Wildcats in my CZ 527 and 50 gr Bergers in my Pac-Nor (1 in 10 twist) barreled Rem 700 VLS, but you should have no troubles with the 26 gr Barnes Varmint Grenade.

Its just a matter of finding the right load. Try the 204 ruger forums:

35 gr bergers and both 32gr and 39gr BK's shoot 1/2" or less out of my XR-100, never tried the grenades, they would be fine on gophers I don't about yotes.:rolleyes:

Cguy.

Have you shot these in your rifle yet. I wouldn't be loading a bunch of anything if I haven't confirmed that they group well in my rifle?

I shot them out of my CZ varmint and my HS varmint, only at 100 yards and they were acceptable, the powder I was using was win 748. FS
 
I personally believe in shooting heavier bullets in varmint guns as I think they handle the wind better and deliver better downrange performance - especially on stuff like coyotes, etc.
 
I like the 39 and 40 and 32 grn in my 204. I find that the 32 hit hard at 400yrds or better as they dont drop nearly as quick as the 39 and 40`s. I have tried the seira`s, hornady,barns,noslers, etc. and i find the that it all depends on the gun but mine likes 32-40 grns no prob.
 
yeah i got tons of wind here! and out of my 700 sps i found the 40 gr noslers are performing better even at 100 yards.. 27.3gr of varget 32gr shoot very well on clam days but i only get like two of those a month... so stayed with the 40!
 
If you crunch the numbers with the length of the Hornady 204 bullets, a 1:11 or even a 1:10 twist would be better. Having said that, with the velocities I get using BL-C2 I seem to do OK with the 40's. This is my favorite varmint cartridge!!!
