maybe some one can set me straight here please. I have a H&R single 20g pardner, I have been told that you can and can not shoot rifled slugs with a fixed full choke. I have shot about 12 to 15 slugs with very good results at 25m.... So what is right? i do use this gun for upland game and always take it on canoe trips for a JIC. Advise please
thanks

What does H&R tell you? Call them and ask what they recommend.

Most manufacturers seem to say to use an open choke for rifled slugs and either a rifled choke or rifled barrel for sabot-type slugs.

My gunsmith has shown me full choke shotguns with the muzzle split and one with a full choke tube that split the tube and the barrel. The culprit was the customer had been shooting slugs through the full choke.

I don't doubt some one will tell you to go ahead. It's your choice!

rifled slugs have wings on them that are ment to cush and fit thru any choke what do you think grandpa did with his old shot gun he could not change the choke at will .yes you can shoot rifled slugs thru a full choke shot gun .DUTCH

there is always one that will tell to giver! i will have to ask the manf. to get a proper anwser. to bad if its no because i was hitting a small pie plate at 25 m and there was no center left.my concern is that i let my wife and friends use my guns at the range and i would rather they stay alive and well. If it is just more ware over time then i can live with that as this is carry and beat gun
thanks for the reply

"...rifled slugs have wings on them that are ment(SIC) to..." Rifled slugs are rifled to impart spin.
"...what do you think grandpa did..." He used a patched round ball. No rifled slugs until 1898.

I have been told that you can and can not shoot rifled slugs with a fixed full choke.

I expect that you will get the same two answers here:D

Rifled slugs are designed to pass through any bore size within the gauge and through any choke restriction. The only problem I have ever heard but have never seen involve choke tubes and not fixed choke. Again I have never seen the results if this. I have read manufacturer information that suggest the use of open chokes for slugs, but I have not seen one warning against tighter chokes, but I have not read all the information that is out there. I have often read and heard that more open chokes result in better accuracy with slugs. From my own experience, I have better results from modified and full than from imp, cyl and cyl. Call the manufacturer if you wish! Can't hurt! In my opinion any modern firearm in good condition will handle rifled slugs through a fixed full choke.

Rifled slugs were designed for guns like your grandpa probably owned and shot:D

The rifling on a Foster or Brenneke slug is designed to collapse to allow it to pass through a choke. That it also imparts a spin is a bonus; these slugs are stabilized by being nose-heavy, like a badminton shuttle.

The only chokes that can't be used with slugs are some of the extra-full "turkey" type chokes. I think that if a full choked barrel has failed from a slug going through it, the real cause is likely a bore obstruction. When rifled slugs were introduced, most shotguns had full choke barrels and most gun owners only had one shotgun that they used for everything; dedicated slug guns were unheard of until the 1950s, when Ithaca introduced the Deerslayer.

Open chokes are commonly recommended for use with slugs because they are most likely to provide the best accuracy, not because they are required. That said, my 870 with a smoothbore slug barrel is more accurate with the modified choke installed than improved cylinder.

I would continue to shoot RIFLED SLUGS, not slugs designed to be fired in a rifled barrel. Slugs for rifled barrels will not colapse as going through the choke and could cause problems.

The slugs intended for use with rifled barrels are generally of the discarding sabot type, which do require rifling to be properly stabilized. They would be extremely inaccurate out of a smoothbore barrel.

some folks just got all the answers l. still have my grandpas mossy 500 pump full choke gun and he shot more deer with it then you and i will ever shot in are life time .and yes the wings or what ever you want to call them are ment to crush and fit thru a full choke DUTCH
