I was looking for input on whether a 20g slug is a good choice for deer hunting in the shotgun season and what the effective range might be. I recently acquired a 20g combo gun (Savage Model 24H) that has sights and thought it would make a great gun for the controlled hunt.

Thanks in advance for your help.

What is the other barrel chambered for? If its a centerfire cartridge, its probably a bad idea and possibly illegal to be carrying it during a shotgun only season (even if it isn't loaded). If its a rimfire, you should be OK. Otherwise, a 20ga slug should be plenty for deer.

The other chamber is .22mag - I actually was going to look in to that as the regs say that it isn't legal to carry a rifle chambered for anything greater than a .22, but I wasn't sure about where the .22mag fit. Thanks for pointing it out.

What choke is on the 20 ga. barrel?
"...where the .22mag fit..." Rimfire is rimfire. I suspect you'd be ok as long as you have no rifle ammo with you. However, an e-mail or a phone call to the MNR wouldn't hurt. They're pretty good at responding fairly quickly.

Um...

I can take my .223 out for coyote and at the same time my 12 guage for deer. No where in the regs does it say you can not hunt for two different species or carry more then one firearm.

Looked up from the new 2008 regs

For example, when hunting deer during
a bows-only season, you may use or carry only bow hunting
equipment. You may not carry a rifle or shotgun for hunting
other game species. However, when hunting deer during a rifle/
shotgun season you may also carry a rifle or shotgun for small
game (in addition to your firearm that meets the specifications
to hunt deer) because it is the same type of firearm.

They sure didn't word it to well, did they?

Do not carry a deer licence at the same time, they can charge you and it's up to you to prove you weren't hunting deer it's a real catch 22 situation as your small game is on the card and so is the deer, if you get stopped by an eager beaver you never know, the charge might not stick but it could be a long haul.

When I said rimfire, I was thinking 22lr. I think they recently changed the wording to exclude 22 mag and the 17 rimfires. Best to contact the MNR and confirm.

Thanks a lot for all of the suggestions. The 20g is modified choke. I'll give the MNR a call to determine whether I carrying the .22mag attached to the 20g would potentially cause any problems. I'll let you know what their comments are.

Have a great day.

I contacted the mnr to enquire about whether I could carry the .22mag/20g combo during the shotgun season. Here is the response:

Thank you for your enquiry.

As per the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act, Regulation 665/98 -
Hunting:

70. A person who hunts deer or moose shall not use or carry a firearm
unless the firearm is of a class specified for use during the open
season applicable to the species, person and area in Ontario Regulation
670/98 (Open Seasons - Wildlife). O. Reg. 581/99, s. 4.

The class specified for that hunt is CLASS 6, which is muzzle-loaders
and shotguns, and therefore a .22 mag is not in class, and cannot even
be carried.

So, looks like it's a no-go. bummer.
