20ga #9 Target Loads for Woodcock

Curious to learn if many folks use the 20ga #9, 7/8oz (AA) loads for Woodcock? Planning on using the cartridge this Fall......hope I am able to score some hits....it's difficult enough as it is even when using a 12ga :)

Yes... fine for woodcock - and will work in a pinch on grouse as well, although I prefer to use 8's for both.

20 gauge AA's are also available in 8's ... code AA208.
So are Remington STS ... code STS20SC.
Get your dealer to order you a flat or two now - you'll
have them in hand when the season opens.

Got plenty of shells......no worries there :)......would prefer to use #11 game loads if I can get my hands on any.

Combo of M/Skeet is what I mainly use......also M/C.
 
I use 20 skeets (#9) and it works well on the timberdoodles...doesn't take much to knock them down...you need a good dog though to find 'em!
 
I've used that combination quite a bit for shooting snipe in the past, but can't any more due to nontoxic shot regs. I use #7 steel now. Are woodcock listed in the regs as upland birds or migratory waterfowl in your part of Canada? I would have thought waterfowl, but I'm a long ways from woodcock country.
 
I use to use my .410 with #6 and Mod. choke. It's been a while since I've gone after Woodcock, mainly due to my geographical loacation.
But your 20g with #9 should do nicely.

Woodcock fall under federal regulation sand are in fact migratory (they are not waterfowl) And there is an exemption on non-toxic shot for Woodies. This is a federal reg.

Nope only for Woodcock......#7 1/2 or #8 for Grouse :)
 
Each to their own ... I have killed a litera s#@t - load of grouse in our 3-4 week window while hunting Woodcock specifically with 9's ... (and have not lost any, to the best of my knowledge ... solely because 9's are " too light " ) I do prefer 8's, howeve ... and they too work perfectly well on Timberdoodles.

All of my Snipe hunting has been done in the Caribbean ... and I can verify, as can many others, that 9's are both most popular and most effective.
 
I would imagine that alot of grouse are "hit" each year with all shot sizes but especially 8's and 9's that show no sign of being hit. Going away shot angle with small shot in the gizzard and intestines. These are the birds that have caused me to change to 6's for all my grouse hunting. I have killed a lot of birds with 9's and they will kill grouse, I like the added insurance of the 6's for angled shots through dense cover. I am not arguing ethics just what I like to use for grouse hunting.
