20ga Brenekke slugs on deer

Friend of mine uses only 20ga because he likes the lighter recoil and also uses 20ga Brenekka slugs because they do the job and are cheap(and he prides himself on being cheap lol) about $15-20 per box vs $25-30 per box sabots.
Last year we hunted on his farm and he shot about 200 lbs deer from bout 80 meters and it went down with one shot and only ran few meters.
Upon gutting the animal we discovered both lungs destroyed and the projectile stopped on the other side, it expended to an object that looked like rectangle.

i was playing with a 12 guage shooting at a pumpkin and had breneke slugs . the gun was new to me and the first slug i shot was low as it tore up the ground in front. second shot was perfectly centered and tore a hole about five inches. to my surprise it did not exit the pumpkin but veered off and was stuck in the left wall of the pumpkin. i was disappointed. it was a fourty yard shot and i expected it to exit. i did not shoot more as i wanted to show my son the results. i will try some more and see what happens.

If a 12ga Brenneke can penetrate 7 inches of Spruce wood ...... then it will definitely go through a pumpkin ...

If a slug can penetrate concrete and brick ; it should be able to penetrate a pumpkin .
went out this morning and shot off a few more breneke rounds. i had some pass through success . after thinking about the round that failed to pass through the pumpkin i believe it key holed . it left a large five inch rectangular entrance hole and lodged in the side almost making it out.the slug was damaged on the side and as i said i believe it key holed.
farmer47, what do you mean by "key holded"? Not sure I understand ...
Is it possible that it was a ricochet .... that it hit the ground first .... and then entered the pumpkin?
OP, to answer your question .... I don't have actual experience harvesting a deer with a 20ga Brenneke. But I have done extensive testing on slugs ....
As far as I know there are only two 20ga Brenneke slugs on the market in Canada ... and they are hard to find:
1.) Rottweil Brenneke Classic 20ga 7/8 oz at 1345 fps
2.) Rio Royal Brenneke 20ga 7/8 oz. at 1360 fps
Both will kill a deer just fine at reasonable ranges .... up to lets say 50 meters or 70 meters .... I mean, that is what Brennekes were designed for 120 years ago.
May I ask what type of Brenneke ammo you have stocked?

ofaustuso and bigbuba you could be right about the slug ricochet as my first shot was low and tore up the ground.it was my second shot that got stuck in the pumpkin.i could have been low with that shot as well . as for key holed i was thinking that it was flying sideways when it hit as the nose showed no damage. guess i will never know for sure. i have a lot of respect for slugs and am always amazed as to the damage they do.to the original poster i would try a few different slugs as shotguns can be finicky as to what slugs they will shoot well. when you find the slug it likes go hunting .
mbogo3, a 260 grain sabot running at 1900 fps is a very different animal than a much heavier and slower Brenneke ....
I’ve got 15 boxes (10rd. each) of the Rottweil 20ga. Brenneke slugs. I bought one box on sale at a local CT. Shot them in our gun and they shot very well, so I went back and cleared the shelf.
Challenger also loads a 7/8oz. Brenneke slug in 10rd. boxes.
I’ve got our little 20ga. 870 youth gun (21” barrel) setup with a rifled choke tube and a Holosun sight. My son is familiar with this gun from turkey hunting, so figure it’s a good setup for him on deer. Shots will be <50 yards. Gun shoots 3 slugs into a Timmies coffee cup lid at 40 yards.
Smart move with that stash of Brenneke slugs!
It would seem to me that you are all set ... and to head out there and harvest a buck .... and to create memories ...
