I have 3 12 gauges already, only one of which is capable of shooting steel. My dad is thinking of getting back into duck/goose hunting now that he's retired. He stopped hunting before the whole steel shot thing came into place. I really want a 20 gauge and will be buying one at some point this summer. Can my dad use it for ducks/geese without being too badly handicapped? or is gonna have to buy a new gun?

I am going to use my 20gauge semi auto for all of my duck and goose hunting. One of our club members does really well using his 20gauge over and under for geese. The key is keeping the shot distances reasonable.

My friend has a 20 gauge Win 1200 vented rib changeable chokes that his step dad bought him when he was a kid and he is the most successful duck and goose hunter I know. He has used it for 28 years and has never considered using anything else.

If you will be field hunting the geese in layout blinds, your shot distances will be very close and a 20 gauge will work very well. I also have a couple of friends that use 20s for jump shooting ducks and they never think they are handicapped. There are some very good non-toxic loads out there now, some even for the mighty little 28 that I may try this fall myself!:D

Or using the higher grade ammo like Hevi shot or Tungsten Martix, I dropped several geese with the 2 3/4 inch 20 g load of number 5's Tungsten Matrix out of my modified choke. Lucky for me I bought a bunch of it when it was only quite expensive. FS

This is only my opinion , I used a 20 for years on ducks and this was before the shot like hevi shot and bismuth was around , and did just fine. I had to pick my shots , under 25 , 30 yards . I would say use the high end non tox like a tungsten or bismuth and a good choke and watch the ducks pile up .
