210 gr. berger vld hunting.

Hope you have better luck with the 210gr "Burgers" than we had with the 168gr out of a 300 RUM at 600 yards on my son's cow elk. They exploded like confetti on the ribcage leaving just a flat jacket like a quarter.Barely made it to the lungs. The other cow I dropped trotting at 500 with the same load same results.Good thing I didn't hit the center of the shoulder blade or it would have escaped wounded. These were chronied at 3400 fps.Yes both elk died, but I like a bullet to hold together after impact like an Accubond or Partition. If bullet placement had have been a little off the wolves would have had a free meal miles later.JMO..........Harold

Thanks for posting. 3400 fps is very fast for a hunting load using a non-premium bullet. By non-premium I'm not referring to price but bullet construction. I would use a Barnes if I were to load up a light weight bullet to that velocity for hunting. I'm into heavy and slow, that is why I want to try the 210 grain bullet. Just to double check, were your 168 grain Bergers hunting bullets or target bullets? The boxes are very similar.

Anyone who wants to [Including Berger] can tout these type of bullets as "hunting" bullets.

However, I consider them premium target bullets, and no more!

Sure, they will kill game, so will Sierra Match and Hornady A-max, but that does not make them a game bullet.

And all this talk about long range? What if an Elk shows up at 40 yards? Are you going to pass because it is too close?

I strongly recommend a bullet specifically designed for game, and give up the ½ moa to secure proper terminal performance.

There are plenty of very accurate "game" bullets out there that reliably expand well out there. [I know that the 140, .270 cal AB expands at 600 yards]

Once you have successfully taken 50+ head of game in all possible conditions with a given bullet, you can recommend it as a dependable game bullet.
After seeing a few of the Berger results, and hearing many more, I believe the Berger does NOT qualify.

Regards, Dave.
