22-250 and 223 for deer

Kodiak: That was a good guess - a 45 70 might leave a hole like that - three ribs broken on the way in - but it was not a 45 70. The lungs were soup.

Bear: No - it was not a 55 grain going 3500 FPS - nor was it a 300 Ultramag with Bergers - though they were both good guesses. Isn't it interesting how widely spread that your guesses are - which shows us something. If I were shown the pictures - without knowing the answer - I don't know what I would guess. Maybe I should have started a separate thread - and posted what the prize is.

Like I said earlier, I have no need to use my coyote rifles for big game, I have more appropriate calibers for that task and don't feel the need to "test" marginal calibers on live big game...... it's an ethics thing. ;)

I know what works and I'll stick with that.

Your a hoot man. Get off your horse.

Does anyone have pictures of how little damage is done when the wrong bullet or calibre is used?

I will post a picture of a shot taken from a high tree stand - 85 yards from a young eight-point. He went down, then got up and struggled for about 25 yards, then expired.

When we were cutting it up, I noticed the entry wound and took a picture of it - and here it is. The shot was a couple inches high - I will blame it on the height of the stand - 30 feet from the ground.

There might be a prize for the poster who can name the weight and bullet type - and a bonus if you can tell me the velocity.

Does anyone else have an idea what weight and type of bullet and velocity took this deer down? I'd sure like to hear from others. This isn't intended to make fools of anyone - it is just a fun game - come play.

Does that mean the .220 Swift is the new .375 Ruger....??

No, it means that 30 years ago, or not even that long ago if you do a search on CGN, many hunters said the .243 Win. was marginal for deer. I think much of that had/has to do with bullet selection.

For example, here you will find 19 pages of opinions on the .243 Win...

Now the argument has shifted to the .223 and .22-250 because there are really good quality bullets available in .224"; these bullets will offer much better penetration and weight retention than what could previously be had.

Rem 338 - Deer die with that - and 53 and 50 grain and they all have smaller entrance holes - usually take one rib out if they hit it. Like 1899 was thinking a few posts back - if it went in on an quartering shot, it might do that damage - but this was broadside and from above. I know it surprised me - enough to get blood on the camera to take the picture.

Republic : I like that guess - I haven't seen deer hit with a shotgun slug - but I expect that sort of hole is what it would do. Anyone got pictures of a shotgun hole in a carcass? I guess I did do a bear with a slug once - but the bear hooked a claw in the wound and tore himself open with a hind foot.

Bear : Well - I think that it is very educational for us to search our experience - and attempt to draw conclusions - then open the door to reveal ... our own error. If I took this test - I would fail.

1899 : He was coming across the clearing calling for a doe "buuck - buuuuck - buuuck" every few steps - patches of thorns and willows around, but I waited until he stopped broadside with no cover.
