hard times in the maritimes again so my rifle inventory is going to take a hit, and I will be left with my 22-250 for deer season, what bullet would suggest, I do reload for it or any factory load suggestions would be great, it shoots federal fusion in a 1 inch hole at 200yds and please no BS about using a 22 center fire on deer, it's this or stay home

I haven't shot any deer with my stevens. The 22-250 hits really hard but needs the right bullets to penetrate. I loaded up nosler partitions and they've broken both shoulders on a few coyote. Any 60+ gr SP bullet should work good too. The guilded metal bullets should have great penetration and weight retention, I haven't tried 'em.

Its all about shot placement when shooting large game with such light bullets, it doesn't take much tissue/bone to defect it off target from the vitals.

just ordered some 70gr speer, got my first deer with a 70gr speer on top of 33.5 imr 4064, 3300fps from chroney , to me that's almost the same as a savage 250 with a 87gr at 3000fps

hornady uses the v-max terminology on their small bore bullets, and a max on their larger bore bullets, it's just what they are "marketing" them towards, just like their z-max is designed for zombies lol

Hornady advertises both the Amax and Vmax as having "rapid, explosive expansion with limited penetration." The Amax is a target bullet and the Vmax a varmint bullet. Hornady manufactures many bullets which are actually meant for big game hunting. Neither the Vmax nor Amax fall into that category.

thanks for the info guys, the rifle I have is a savage axis, 1 in 12 twist, I wish I could find some 70gr speer
I shoot 70gr Speer in my 1:12" A-Bolt. 1" groups are the norm. I have 300 of them here. The 53gr TSX is only about .007" longer than the 70gr Speer so might work in your 22/250.

Proper bullets are just as important for his application as shot placement. Too many dumb-dumbs using varmint bullets from CDN Tire for 223 or 22/250 big game hunting.

I love my 22 250 and have shot one for over 20 years ,A deers ribs are not that tough and a good bullet will put them down fast .I have seen a few guys shoot them in the head and neck with light bullets and thy are bang flops for me it is in the ribs every time and thy always die ,,fast ,,,most guys that I hunt with hunt with the 222 and 22 250 can really shoot as thy hunt with them all winter shooting coyotes on the run in front of hounds .these guns can really shoot great groups and the guys know there guns ,buy a good bullet and shot them in the ribs and you will have your deer in the freezer ,,good luck Dutch

well, I guess I'll be the stick in the mud here! I would sooner see you stay home with your feet up in a lazy boy recliner chair and a cold beer in your hand watching a hunting show on TV! Take a spin out this way and I'll give ya some venison that was one shot killed instantly dead with a 7mm-08. Yeah, I'm an old dog and can't learn new tricks, sorry;) If you go with your 22 cal, please be sure to be bang dead on with the best bullet that will be suggested here.

oh come on not Many deer are 300lbs and tough as nails ,most are less then 100lbs and got ribs the size of a pencil once you get the meat off them ,,a good 22 cal bullet will get the job done ,,Dutch

This is wrong...

The V-Max is a totally different design that was intended to be frangible to limit penetration on varmints.

The A-Max was designed to provide higher BC/SD with no consideration for expansion and testing and field use has proven high failure rates on game as a result, Hornady now recommends that the A-Max not be used on game.

The SST was designed as a rapid/controlled expansion bullet intended for hunting.

On the outside they may appear the same... they are not... and it is not just how they are "marketed", it is how they are made.
