Hey all.

Want to buy a Winchester Model 70 Stealth in a 22-250. The only caliber I am interested in, for that rifle.

I know the 22-250 isn't a great long range cartridge, but I want to know if it would be a precision type. Tight groups. I would hope to get out to MAYBE 500 yards. I know it is a gopher/prairie dog type round.

Any thoughts?

The definition of precision covers alot of ground. The .22-250 certainly is capable of very good accuracy - it was a Sako .22-250 I used to shoot my first real 10 shot .25 minute group, however it won't impress the benchrest guys very much. For casual shooting at 500 yards it would certainly work fine, and good bullets can be had inexpensively when compared to larger calibers.

What the csrtridge is capable of depends on the twist in the barrel.
If you have a fast twist for the longer bullets it will be fine, however most 22/250's are set up to spit out 55 grain bullets, not the longer 69 or 75 grainers.

It will still do alright at 500 for plinking and fun however....

I want to try and pick up a 70, before they're all gone. It didn't say what rate of twist, the barrel was......

Checked at the local Highway Robbing hunting shop, yesterday. He said Winchester is outta business. Anything he had on order has been cancelled.

Thanx for the replies, guys. If theres anymore, let em fly.

Like most rimless cartridges, they can all be made to shoot. The unknown is the barrel quality and the condition of the chambering. If either is out of whack, it doesn't matter if the rifle is in 6PPC, will not shoot.

The 22/250 and 50 to 55gr bullets can take varmints out to around 600yds. Further under light winds otherwise those bullets get blown around alot.

For off the rack, sure, a very nice cartridge. If building one from scratch and desiring LR shooting, would put a 1 in9 or 8 twist so that I could shoot heavier bullets.

I have owned a couple and really like the cartridge within its limits.

my model 70 will group 5 shots you can cover with a quarter at 200 yards........I can guarantee that a good shooter could do the same at at least twice that.......beside all I need is minute of coyote anyway........lol

"Winchester" has been out of business for about 20 years. The guns with the Winchester name were made by a company called US Repeating Arms, which is/was owned by the Herstal group from Belgium. They licensed the Winchester name from Olin Corp. Likely the model 70's will continue to be produced somewhere else, Japan, Slovakia, China, who knows?
