22-250 loads

Hey all,

I am starting to develop a load for my new to me remmington 700. It has a 1:14 twist heavy barrel and I plan on shooting mid range (300-600) yards for Prarrie dogs. I have read a lot about potential loads in this caliber and barrel twist and am thinking of going with the hornady 40 grain v-max over varget.

One thing I am concerned about is the stability of the powder. Hornady states right in the manual that dangerous pressure levels can develop when varget is stored at high temperatures. How high are they talking? I know it gets really hot here in the summer but am I going to have to keep my ammo on ice while varmint hunting?

Any thoughts recommendations and comments are welcome, I cant wait to work this load up!

My mistake, seems varget is Hodgdons recommendation for a powder not sensitive to exteremes in temp. But Hornady cautions about ball powders in high heat.

IMR 4895, 34.5 grains, 55gr Hornady V-max bullets, 2.350 OAL. This is what I worked up to and works great. I have a Savage Axis 22-250.

for 3-600 yards I would shoot a heavier bullet . in your case I would go with a 55gr. bullet. For my Model 700 I preffered a 55gr. Sierra Blitz, winchester case and primer - 35.4gr. IMR-4064 . Was around 2.45-2.500 in OAL...
