I have a Brand new, unfired stevens 200 in 22-250 coming in the mail which I got as a trade for a firearm that I was selling here on the EE. I plan on doing a bit of coyote hunting this fall and winter and would like to know at what distances should I sight this rifle in at..(For Max shots out to 400 yards) This is my first .22 centerfire so I would like some expert advice..I do have a spot picked out that I can safely sight in and shoot at that yardage. Also, recommend a "cheap" scope that will still work great...and what magnifcation do you recommend?

I will be shooting factory winchester 55 grain pointed soft points.

Id reccomend +2" @ 100, which will put you dead on at about 260-270 yards, bullet drop @ 400 yards will be around a foot (with 55gr @ 3650 fps ammo).

Bushnell trophy 3-9x40 would be about as cheap of a scope as Id put on a centerfire. Should be able to find one for about $160-180. Despite what many will say, you dont need a 18x or 24x scope to hit a coyote. Ive taken many at 300-350 yards with a 9x scope, and one at 330y with a 6x Leupold! :)

100 yards. get a Burris fullfield II with ballistic plex.

Thats what im using for my Stevens 200 in .223, damn good out to 300 yards for me.

1.5 inches high at 100 yards should put you around 6 inches low at 300 yards. I would say go with a Bushnell Elite 3200 with the low end magnification around 5 or 6 power. I would not recommend a 150 dollar scope on a 22-250. The sharp recoil does not get along with cheap optics IMO.

Thats Funny....All That has been on my Stevens 200 22-250 for 3 yrs now is a $70 World Class Tasco 3-9x40mm....Seems to me last time i checked it still punches 1/2"MOA into targets!!:bsFlag:

For a 22-250 I would say buy a quality scope in a 4 to 12 or 4 to16 with mil dots .sight cross hairs in at 100 .and the dots will be very close to being sighted for farther distances.you can verifie by shooting measured distances.

I shoot 55gr Gamekings, rifle is sighted 1.5in high at 100 yards.....this gets you around .25in high at 200yards.....roughly 6in low at 300yards.

3-9 scope will work well for hunting, but on the .22-250 it is really nice to have a little more zoom, I use a 5-15

Just an idea here.

How about sighting in 1.5",2" ,or 3" (take your pick) at 100m and then ACTUALLY shooting it at 400m.

Then there's no guessing as to how much it drops at 400m.

Well the Tasco varmint my brother had to throw in the garbage from a 22-250 after 20 or so shots and the Bushnell legend that I had to chuck after 1 season of Coyote hunting on top of my T3 lite 22-250 tell a different story. Both scopes would not hold zero and the adjustment knobs actually lost the “clicks”. Felt like mush when trying to zero again. The Legend lasted way longer than the Tasco but failed as well. Maybe you got a good one. I would rather spend $300 once over spending $100 and then $300 later on when the cheap scope lets go. Just my $.02.

I sight a '250 for 200 yards. I got tired of shooting over coyotes with longer sightins. Theres a lot more room for elevation error on a standing gopher then there is on a coyote. They just aren't that big top to bottom once they are peeled, and hitting them around the edges doesn't do any good.

bartell, did you just condone a stevens/bushnell trophy combo?

Feeling the recession are you?:p

To awnser the OP, i would go with the 2" high at 100, and mount a 4-12x40 bushnell 3200. I hunted yotes with the exact combo for a bit, but that was in my gun whore days, so i changed the 250 to a 358 win, then traded it for a ruger 22-250, then sold that and bought a tikka in 338 federal.

Now that work has picked up, the gun whoring will likely restart.

When I bought my stevens 200 in 22-250 two years ago I put a bushnell legend 5-15X40 and have had no problems with it yet.

I buddy of mine just bought a CZ750 sniper in .308 and the pkg came with a Bushnell 6500/30mm 4x30 X I think. It is a $1000 scope and wouldn't hold it's zero The store replaced it and now no problems...................Harold

Bushnell Elite 3200 series is as cheap as I will go for a scope. They aren't very exp (2-300) sometimes cheaper if they are on sale and are great scopes for the money. Leupold Riflemen are similiar if you want that particular line. High magnification is really a bad idea for coyote hunting - low end of the range should be about 2-3x. When I first tried my hand at coyote hunting I used a Rem 700 VS with 6.5-20x40 Leupold with fine reticle. The first coyote I ever saw with that rig was at 40m. I didn't even have a chance - I learnt that coyotes don't equal varmints. Currently I use a CZ527 American M1 with a Swarovski 4-12x50mm scope. I almost never put it up to 12x hunting.

Yes, you learn very quickly from coyote hunting, at least in the East, that you are (in most circumstances) unlikely to spot one coming from a mile away. Chances are, a yote responding to the call is going to suddenly appear, unannounced, at 200 yards or less. A scope with good clarity and a wide field of view is going to be worth a lot to you more in those situations than a high powered one. And, then, in most circumstances, you just hold on the fur.

Good call. I never paid attention to the OP’s location when giving magnification advice. Here in the prairies we need the high magnification scopes. I still stand by my not buying cheap optics advice though.

Well, after I do a bit of grouse hunting this coming saturday, I'm gonna head out and sight the '250 in. I did a major "cheap out" mainly cuz I have to stock up on my funds as the construction season is in it's last quarter before late fall, which means soon time for layoff...So, laugh if you will, but I'm gonna put something a lot higher grade on my rifle in the future........tonight I mounted a Tasco Pronghorn 3-9X40:slap: on weaver bases, with weaver quad-lock rings....Will do for now...If I do get the chance to get out this weekend, I'll let you know how it goes..

Bring on the critizism.:D
