how would the 22-250 compare to the 223 down range? most 250's arent quite a fast of barrel so shooting a heavier bullet might be out of the question?

does any one have any sort of info pertaining past 500 yars with a 22-250?

Drop is considerable from 500 to 700 meters, 55 grain bullets aren't particularly aerodynamic. You can build a tight twist 22-250 (I had a 22-250 AI with 1-9 twist for a while, that worked pretty well out to 700). I also have a 22-243 Middlestead, which gives me more speed, but still has a 1-14 twist, so longer bullets won't work in it, and speed only buys you so much at longer ranges. next one I build will have a 1-7 tube on it. - dan

Past 500 meters, a fast-twist 223 will knock the snot out of a standard 22-250.
As far as I know, there are no factory fast-twist 22-250's on the market.

Comparing a standard-twist 22-250 to a standard 223, the 22-250 is somewhat better.

I really want to try a gain-twist 22-250 one of these days. Starting at around 1 in 15 or so, and gaining to about 1 in 9 28 inches later. In a 22-250 AI, I believe this should offer similar life to a 12 or 14" 22-250, yet still be able to stabilize heavy bullets. Gain twists often buy you a few more FPS, too.

From what I've heard of fast twist 22-250 (non-gain), the throad wears out very quicky. Within a thousand rounds or so, it's so rough that fouling becomes a major issue, and starts damaging the thing jackets of most match bullets to the point where they start coming apart in flight

If you get a fast twist 22/250, you can push the 80gr Amax to a mile with ease. I am doing it right now with a 223 and the 22/250 would be 300 to 400fps faster. Drift would be reduced considerably.

I am using a 7 twist but an 8 twist would be sufficient. Wear would be higher but performance is never free.

The lighter 22cal bullets crap out by 700yds. I used to have a slow twist 22/250 and beyond 700yds, it was a pig.

I am not looking much past 500 for now. Having it a new barrel installed with a fast twist wouldnt be bad.

Can you go with a shorter barrel or will accuracy take a crap?

What is out there for turret caps that can go over existing covers, if any?
I have a 3200 7-21 X 40 , just curious if the answer is a dif scope

shorter barrels are often more accurate than longer ones, it is only velocity that is impacted; > velocity does not mean > accuracy. Longer barrels can have greater harmonic issues that can affect accuracy.

I have a few gain twist rifles, and I like this idea. Next barrel I get from Ron Smith will be along these lines. - dan

I just finished a 22-250 with an eight inch twist. So far I've shot 40rounds of 75 grain Bergers through it. It's been so windy lately, it's been a bit hard to tell what the accuracy is likely to be at 300M. My 300 meter groups are just over an inch tall and just over three inches wide. If I get a calm moment, i'll try some groups at 300. If it works reasonably well, I'll shoot it at some long range matches this summer. Shoots very flat and seems slightly better than my 6BR in the wind. I'm embarassed to admit, it's built on a Savage action! Regards, Bill.

Welcome to the dark side. Why be embarrased? Saving all that money and having a great shooting rig is a bonus. You could always just give me the extra money you would have spent. That would make us both happy:runaway:

Suggest you try the 80gr Amax and Berger. These bullets offer a substantial BC increase and you can push them nice and fast. Wouldn't surprise me that at 3200/3300fps then perform better then your 6BR.

The Berger has been shooting stupidly well in my 223. From my 200yd groups, I would expect sub 1" at 300m in calm air. But then when is it ever really calm...

Enjoy...

I've got some 80 grain Noslers on the way to try as well. I've made sufficient modifications to the Savage action to assauge my embarrassment a bit. I've not chronographed the thing yet but will do so before using it at long range. Regards, Bill.

Jeez Bill maybe if they increase social security I'll be able to buy a Savage. All I could afford was a Stevens! :) I see that I have to do 22 250 now too and that the 6BR might be topped. Life sure is getting complicated!!! So much for laughs! Interesting experiment, hope you will let us know how it goes. fred

Bill, you know that turning a Savage into a Rem is just silly :dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Now you got to tell us what mods you made.....PLEASE;)

That is some fancy shooting downunder. He must really know how to drive cause the MK's have a much lower BC then the Amax/Bergers and these get bounced around enough. A very toasty load too. That powder is Varget.

Wonder if its real...

My only real mods were to add a third bedding screw and to replace the Savage wedgie recoil lug with a RPA lug. In addition, the bolt face was trued and the locking lugs cut to provide full contact. The barrel was fitted conventionally (no nut). Maybe if I stamp "Winchester" on the barrel, I'll feel better about the whole outfit. Regards, Bill.

What are your thoughts of this gun and load I came across tonight ???

That's a Sportco action with Krieger barrel, mike, same as the kid's, only his is in 308.
They're good actions, but need an adapter onec the barrel swap is made due to the fact that the bolt locks up in the barrel , not in the receiver.

You'd be farther ahead with your Remington - and this coming from a Sportco fanatic!

The 6.5 mystic is, in the photos, a beautiful job. but........why the oddball cartridge? It has absolutely no advantage over a 6.5x55 for which plenty of manufacters ,Win, Norma, Lapua, Remington make good brass. Good bullets are the same story, i.e. Hornady, Sierra, Berger,et.al. furthermore, the 6.5x55 works just fine in standard head bolts. I have experimented considerably with my 6.5x47 FUBAR, which is simply a necked down .308x 1.5. This, and the closely related Lapua 6.5x 47 shoot well at any range, but could use a little more steam.
I don't mean to be flaming here, but I've recently decided that I can do a lot more shooting if I'm not so busy reforming cartridge cases.
