22-250 Versus 223

Here's how the .22-250 will trash the .223's performance all around.... except for cheap reloading in a gopher town shoot...

I once built (back in 2000) a Winnie M70 sniper rig with a 24" Mclennan 8" twist barrel. I was launching the Sierra MK VLD 80grainers out at 3050ish fps. The Sierra Bullet engineers warned me not to exceed 3150 to 3200 fps for fear that the jackets would peel off. (they were right ....)

My come ups from 100m zero to 300m Agony snap was 2 MOA, to get to the 400 Mover match, I had to add ONLY 1 MOA  Then another 2 MOA to get to the 500m Snap match. Then another 3 MOA to the 600m Deliberate mound. In short, I was inside 15 MOA adjustment from 100m zero to 800m zero.... Just ONE turn of the Leupold VariXIII 6.5 x 20 x 50mm Mildot scope's elevation knob. ONLY one turn would get me to 800m from 100m. With my .308 loads, I would need almost 30 MOA to get to 800m. And using my .223 sniper rig with 75 gr. AMAX bullets coming out at 2850 fps, I still needed under 29 MOA to get from 100m to 800m.

I miss that rifle. A buddy of mine made me an offer I could not refuse for that tackdriver and windcheater.

jumper, fireforming is most certainly not for everyone. The 6.5 Swede is near identical in case capacity and ballistics are very similar. For those who want a plug and play, it is a great choice.

For me, I love wildcatting and there are a number of advantages over the Swede case.
