I need A new gun to shoot Coyote on the farm. I have narrowed it down to either 22-250 or 243. What do you guys think will be better ? I am shooting at ranges of >350 yards any input ? Cheers Andrew

IMO I'd go with the 22-250. Flatter shooting and cheaper ammo. Probably cheaper to reload as well, but I can't say for sure as I don't have a 243.

243 will reach out better than the 22/250. I shoot a Weatherby22/250 in SVM and it shoots very tight groups at 300 or so. Beyond that and the hits become more difficult.

Not that it can't be done well with a 22-250, but a 243 is nothing short of a guarantee for a good solid hit. Not as prone to wind drift etc. Cheap to shoot as it is popular and cheaper to reload.

Either one of them is deadly well past 300 on yotes, the 22-250 would be my choice out of those two.

However, unless you want the extra speed, a 223 is damn fine for that job as well, and is cheaper to operate. (not that cost can ever be truely considered, we are gun nutz after all:redface:)

Buy both of them! Seriously, I'm a .22-250 and a .223 lover. Cheaper price point for components! And yup, I do own a .22-250 and a .243 ;)

If you were looking to take groundhogs/gophers or coyotes at closer range then 22-250, but I would use a 243 on coyotes at the longer ranges for a cleaner kill.

I load my 21" barreled 6mm-284 with 70gr Ballistic Tips @ 3600 + fps and my 22-250 with 55gr Ballistic Tips/V-Max @ 3660fps...

Same velocities and only 15grs difference...

BC's are only marginally better for the 243/6mm cal bullets.

My take is get the gun that you like the most and it really doesn't matter which cartridge when your targets are coyotes.
