Ok I have a problem , Rem 700 in 22-250, has me scratching my head. I am told the gun has seen a ton of shooting in its 20 year life. Now 50% of the time the cases are split total length of the neck. Best it will do is 2 to 3 inch groups at 100 yards.
I stopped shooting it till I get it to the gun doctor, I am guessing "Head space ??

Head space problems usually cause problems at the case head not the mouth,are they winchester brass? I had some win cases do that last spring and thought I had a problem just turned out to be crappy brass. I have a model 70 that has had a ton of ammo put through it and was shooting 2'' @ 100 yards so I pulled the bbl and cut the threads longer to allow 1 turn deeper into the reciever and rechambered it and then cut about 1.5'' off the muzzle and presto back to shooting about 5/8'' @ 100 yards. I am hoping that it will get me another 2 or 3 years out of the bbl before I have to re-barrel it, this may also work for your 700.
 
I would agree that the brass could be on the brittle side, try another batch. Excess headspacing doesn't just happen over a period of time. A .22-250 with a ton shooting in the last 20 years may have a cooked barrel. Try a good copper cleaner like Sweet's 7.62 or some Gunslick foam bore cleaner, one piece cleaning rod, a jag and some patches. Then take the action out of the stock and make sure there isn't any oil, solvents or moisture between the action and stock.
If this doesn't bring the accuracy back a new barrel will.
 
Just curious, but how experienced a reloader are you? Is it possible that you have resized these cases a bit too much?

In 22-250, I would tend to adjust the sizing die until it almost but not quite touches the shoulder, then turn the die down in 1/16 turns until the chambered case allows the action to close without binding.

Wobbles hit on something that might be worth looking into. If the chamber throat is eroded, and you are slightly oversizing the brass, you could be getting a fair bit of propellent gas around the case mouth.

just thought I would update this. Took gun to gun smith he said it had bad throat Erosion and needed a barrel replacement. Not sure if my brother is going to go for that or not. He was given this gun so he has nothing in to it?.. His choice
