.22-250?

a question better posed in a hunting forum. Depends on the bullets used, and that depends on the twist rate of the gun.

With a heavy bullet in hand loaded cartridge and in a tight twist accurate barrel, the cartridge is capable of highly accurate 1000M shots.

The RIFLE however, likely is not. Take it out and experiment. Evaluate its (and your) short range accuracy and extrapolate from there using one of the many on-line ballistics calculators.

I have a 1/8 twist that I shoot serria 80 grainers. I have hit prairie dogs at over 1300 yards and steel at 2000. mine is very accurate and fun to shoot.

Most factory 22-250's come from the factory with 12 or 14 inch twist barrels. Meaning the are mainly for lighter bullets, 55gr or less typically. The lighter bullets just drift too much in the wind to be very useful beyond certain distances. Not to say it can't be done, but I personally wouldn't see much point in Me going past 400y with mine, and I'm way more comfortable within 200y. Mine is a fairly accurate rifle, would I call it a precision rifle? Not really, no.

Most .22-250's have one in 14 twists. a few will stabalize 60 grain bullets but the inital objective was to get 4000 fps with a 40 grain pill thus the slow twist. When mine is finally shot out I will probably go to a one in 12.

I have a Savage same thing thinking of trading for something faster than the 14 are there any factory stuff that comes in 10?

A .22-250 with a 50 gr V-max is an awesome varmint gun. With a well placed shot, you can turn a Ground Hog inside out! My Son's M70 was a .22-250 before I re-barreled it to 6mmbr.
