I've been wanting a fast twist .22-250 for a while. Shooting a 75 amax at 3300+ seems like a pretty good way to make the most out of NB's stupid .224 centerfire only for varmints law. Should do nicly w/ a 75 scirocco, or 62 tsx as well. I've got a #3 contour 1-8" rock barrel and a Model 7 just begging for a rebarrel. I'm thinking chop the tube at 22-24" and try to keep the whole package around 8 lbs all up. There has been some discussion about whether to go straight .22-250, or AI. Clearly either one will toast a barrel in pretty short order, but this is a rilfe that will get carried alot, and most shots will be spaced apart, so feeding, function, and portability are the determining factors. I know the standard .22-250 will do the job, but can the AI be made to feed well out of the model 7? I'm all for the speed if it can be made to work.

I can tell you that a 250-3000 AI, with no tuning whatsoever, feeds without a hitch. My guess would be that its little brother would as well.

Also, an Imp loaded to standard factory ballistics is very easy on barrels, as the pressures and temp at that level are reduced significantly.

Just remember to have the top right corner of the locking lug recess chamfered a bit while the barrel is off... that area sometimes marks the fatter shouldered AI brass on ejection... the ejector pushes the case up against that corner and if it is sharp it cuts a line on the brass...

Would trimming the tube to 22" negate any velocity gains from the improvement? Just a thought, as a highly regarded smith and i discussed this with my stevens 200, when i was thinking about making a wildcat on the cheap.

Yes...

a .22-250 A.I. uses about the same load data for the same velocities as the .220 Swift... a 26 inch barrel would be better...

Of course a longer barrel will boost velocities, but other parameters are to be considered. Think mountain rifle concept. the rifle needs to be very comfortable to carry, while still havuing the ability to deliver the goods at long ranges, when all the walking pays off/w an opportunity for a shot. While the longer barrels will really make the AI shine, I think there are still benifits to be gained over the standard case even w/ at 22". Some extra velocity, less case stretch, and no chance to confuse ammo loaded for the fast twist barrel vs. my standard 1-14 .22-250 came to mind...

Leave the barrel @ 26. One can always cut it if necessary. Can't weld it back on. Mine is 28 and is a better carry rifle that a truck window one. Mark
