22/45 Lite problem

I did the mag release mod and it really is great now.

With all the support and available parts never mind the accuracy the Ruger is hands down the best choice guess thats why I have bought 4 Rugers, really a no-brainer. :)

Funny how the others are compared to the Ruger.

I have had similar experiences with my MK3 22/45. I actually took the time to copy down the dis/reassembly instructions point-style and post it at my cleaning station. I had been in the situation you described in the OP a couple times and just wanted it to be easy for once. I still have to read it every time!

As far as shooting goes. I have had similar issues with FTF and stovepipes, as I am buying pretty much whatever .22 I can find these days and it's not the best stuff. I feel like the issues were all ammo related.

I have read about the mag release mod that Randy mentioned and I think that it's a good idea. Randy, was it very difficult to do?

I agree I use HV copper coated .22 ammo that works best in my 10/22 and .22 AR conversion kit.

The magazine release mod just makes shooting way more enjoyable to shoot as having a button and drop free magazine is the way it should be. :)

So I tried to do the mod myself and would have been fine but the sear assembly pin fell out (should have put tape on the sides of the receiver to hold in place or left the grips on) ended up having machinist buddy come over and fix it. :) Plus I was struggling with the lever he took care of it too.

Anyways here is a video link.

They will tell you a Canadian source if you email them.

My mags drop free now so I don't think I'll risk taking it apart that far to do the magazine disconnect mod. It does seem odd that at first they wouldn't even pop out a small amount, I had to get them started with a fingernail, and now they drop completely out when I hit the button. I'm eager to get to the range this weekend and I'll post an update then.

Great mine was super tight never dropped free by pushing a button.

Sounds like when I tried doing a detail strip on it... I just stopped... It wouldn't hurt going to a smith to see how to do it correctly. On the other hand like mentioned, mags don't drop freely.

Many Youtube videos on this. Watch a few; among a few of them you'll get the right way to re-assemble them. (I still hate doing it, though.)

If you go to ruger forum.net (without the space) and search for articles written by
user ID Bullseye (and corresponding with me 3strokes, you will find that this gentleman gave me instructions that were
so detailed and precise that, much as I hated, disassembling and re-assembling it, I was able to
do the magazine disconnect thing with a Sam Lam bushing,
install Volquartsen sear, extractor, an extension to the magazine ejector.
You will need to have a dental picks kit and a hemostat (extra fingers). a.......n.......d patience.

Bullseye also has his own website with all the details and pictures
to help. ht tp://guntalk-online.com/

e909, disassembly and reassembly gets easier with practice, trust me I've been practicing every night. Let me know how your trip to the range went. Even if your gun runs great:d
Took it to the range tonight and put 100 through it. What a beautiful shooting and operating gun. I'm extremely impressed.

I don't think I'm going to clean it after every trip, but maybe on a monthly or so basis. Will need to pick up a rubber mallet from home depot though.

Yeah that's the guy!! Got mine from him, super nice guy he even followed up with me!:)

after reading about these i looked into them and they looked really neat.
so i ordered one up, got here today - so under a week - which is good for where i am!
im going to try to install this tomorrow after work.
i shall update!

lets see if i can go from a guy who hates to disassemble the 22/45 to a guy that likes to.
and lets see if i can get those mags to drop free!

Use a pick take your time make sure the disconnect pin doesn't come out. After it's done you will love it. Other than the takedown the Ruger eats just about anything and is accurate.

well, took the gun down last night.
put in the new bushing.
easy as pie.
tried to put the gun back together.... nope.

got up early today, read the manual, watched a good dozen videos..... gun still wont go back together.
im stuck at the cursed last stage where you have to stick your tongue out to the left while hopping on one foot in the rain while spinning the gun in a counterclockwise direction and reciting the law of relative motion...... in reverse.

very frustrating little gun.

just cant get that damn main spring housing to snap in!

Maybe its an obvious but is the strut bar seated properly? Or the hammer could be interfering. It still needs to be dropped for reassembly if I recall correctly.

Wayupnorth, I have the same bushing on the way. My malfunction problem has led me to become very familiar with assembly. After reinserting the mainspring housing assembly make sure to move the hammer forward. The manual says to do this by pointing the gun down and pulling the trigger, this has never worked for me, I've always had to do it manually. I reread you problem. The recoil spring assembly on my gun prevents the bolt stop pin from going through unless I pull it forward slightly from the top with a pick.

I owned one of these for all of 1 range trip and now she is sold. A firearm as dirty as .22LR should not be a jigsaw puzzle to disassemble and clean. Plus the mags don't drop free, and the trigger leaves a lot to be desired. Also the "slingshot" cocking handle is prone to pinching fingies.

I don't really understand the hype behind this gun. PITA.

I'm keeping my beretta 72 ;)

I would love to have one but this keeps me from the purchase... Ruger get with it
