Hi Everyone,

Im looking at getting a 22 for some cheap plinking fun for my self and to get my wife started on something easy as shes slightly intimated by the larger cals.

I have found a few in my local store that are in my price range.
So, based on JUST the guns listed here pls give me your opinions\suggestions.

- Ruger MKIII Target 22LR Semi Auto 5 1/2" $419 (used but in mint condition)
- High Standard Sport King 22 LR Semi Auto 6 3/4" $319 (used in VG condition)
- Smith & Wesson Mod 22 A-1 22LR 5 1/2" Target $359 (new)
- Chiappa 1911 .22 $319 (new)

Some of my thoughts and observations.
- From my personal research i have read the Ruger MKIII is the 22 that ur supposed to own, if you only own one 22.
- i love the 1911 design, but i dont know much about Chiappa, i have read they are quite good tho
- Im a fan of S&W, even tho from the 4 i listed here its my least fav. but again, its made my top4 list ....so i still like it a lot
- Highstandard...this one I dont know much about, but after holding it, it felt nice, in fact it was my fav (based only on how it felt in my hand, very nice grips and very heavy) its also the one that looks like its the one thats gotten the most use. but with that said, it still in VG condition.

let the baits opinions flow....please and thank you in advance.

i own a tactical Mossberg 22 and its a fun gun with the 2x 25 round clips :D
as for handguns i got a buddy that i met on CGN that lent me his GSG 1911 .22 and i was surprised by the weight on it (for a .22) felt very sweet in my hands and i would definitely suggest you try it out before selling yourself on the Chiappa :) Good Luck

I appreciate that suggestion, however that's not an option for me, first off i dont know how much a GSG1911 would cost, im sure more than Chiappa, and secondly its not available in my local store.

Do you have any suggestions based on the 4 i listed?

Of the guns listed, I would get the Ruger, as they will best stand up to lots of shooting reliably. High Standards are nice, but should only be fed standard velocity ammo, which is more expensive.

Yep, ruger for sure. I have one and love it, just read/youtube how to dis/assemble and you won't get too worked up. Keep in mind too that I payed that (or slightly less) for mine, shipped from Epps brand new. I prefer brand new 22's since they are so cheap to shoot and most have seen a few boxes!

hi
i have the s&w 22a 2-tone and the gsg 1911 . the 22a cost me 308 inc tax and has been seen on local shelves for 300 in the last couple months. the gsg was 375 + tax but seems to have gone up this spring. of the 2 the s&w is more accurate by far and more comfortable for me. the mag release is more accessible and the parts availability from smith is a phone call away. it is a lighter gun. the gsg would be a 1911 trainer, weight and controls and many part are interchangeable .personaly i find the mag release awkward. from the reading i did before getting the gsg the chiappa was not the gun to get. was that hype i don't know.

the field stripping of both is simple .

if you go for the ruger get them to show you how to field strip it ...... rumor says it's a pain to put back together .

luck cal

Only standard velocity ammo? Never heard this before. I have one that has never seen standard velocity ammo and no problems. It's the most accurate of the .22s I've owned.

I'm looking for a .22 handgun myself. I did a lot of research and thinking about buying a Browning Buckmark 5.5 Contour URX or the S&W 22a-1 5.5". From what I've read the Ruger MKIII is a really good one too.

There is a significant amount of discussion regarding cracked frames over at the rimfirecentral.com forum.

I would also recomend the Ruger, Had one some years ago, only semi i have now is an old Browning Nomad, works good but not many floating around these days.

ty sir, good to know, i will check out the other site u mentioned to research this issue further. its still not too bad $ wise as its still rimfire but worth considering but especially good to know as i would hate to ruin a perfectly fine gun. so thanks again

yeah the chiappa looks kind of flimsy, its a steel gun, mixed with "Chiappalloy*" LOL as per their web site, and i hate to guess at what that is.

i have also heard the Rugers are a pain to field strip, but maybe its worth putting up with it in the end.

so far, im leaning towards the Ruger as its the one i read the most about, but ill still read into the High Standard as it was a beauty IMO and i just need to research this ammo issue. as that is a bit of a PITA.

Thank you everyone that's responded.

Also please feel to add more, especially if you own any of the guns listed above, like the High Standard or Ruger.

oh one more thing im a bit surprised tho, that there was only one recommendation for the NEW S&W, considering its new and none for the Chiappa. Most of you picked the used...must be a tried, tested and true thing lol.
