Is there a difference in 22 ammo that should be used in a pistol versus a rifle? I've been using CCi Mini Mag target 40gr copper plated at 1235FPS and it functions fine in my Browning 1911-22 but would CCI standard velocity 1070FPS be suitable as well? Is there a minimum FPS that should be used for a pistol. I know I could try it to see how it cycles but just looking for opinions at this point.
 
In a target pistol I like to use the min. f/s ammo. that will work the action reliabley.
This will be different for every gun , so testing is required. Of course : accuracy , cost ,
availability will also effect the outcome.
 
The main reason I asked is because I always shot 1235fps and I purchased a brick a while back and didn't pay attention and didn't realize it was 1070 fps until some time after. Haven't tried it yet but will next time out.
 
Gsg 1911 is designed for high velocity ammo. Cant remember what browning 1911 22 preferred when i had it years ago. But i always stick with winchester 333/555 packs and Ferderal 525 plated .
 
Went to Tenda looking for CCI Blazer 22lr 1235 fps for my buckmark rifle which works really well, didn't have any. So I asked for CCI SV 1070 fps, guy at the counter assured me that it wouldn't cycle properly. Went to the range and dumped 150 rounds in 15 minutes without a hiccup.
 
A target pistol , which this one is not is not mage to handle hi velocity ammo.
All guns will shoot it , but the slide will get beat up, and I have had / seem guns with cracked frames.
Hi Standard target guns come to mind as that is what I do a lot of work on.
In a couple 22 rifles, I find hi speed ammo is not near as consistent as standard or target ammo.
I have shot a lot of Fed. 525 round baulk ammo, and while not bench rest ammo, it is quite good enough for gophers to couple hundred yards out of my HB target rifle.

Try it off a sand bag and see how it shoots.
I have a couple small 22 pocket type pistols , and you have to use HS ammo in them, to cycle the action

Sounds like you're asking simply about mechanical reliability: The biggest functional difference between HV and SV in any straight blowback 22LR is the amount of energy it gives to the bolt / cycling mass. Rifle vs. pistol doesn't necessarily matter. Some actions require more push than others to cycle properly, and these tend to run more reliably with HV. Once fully broken in, many will run either when clean. Some struggle more and more as they get dirty.

Some specify they need HV, and some specify they need SV. The latter is pretty unusual these days, but definitely don't run HV in them since they are presumably designed only to handle the energy from SV.
 
Federal Automatch in my High Standard Sharpshooter is as good as it gets. Light recoil and from a rest, shoots like a rifle at 25 yards. Functions perfectly.

My CZ, CIL Anschutz and Cooey don't like Automatch at all; CCI Std Velocity is the round of choice for all three of these, and will consistently produce minimal groups at various ranges (I don't shoot beyond about 40 yards with .22 rifle).
 
All the 22lr ammo in my gun closet is Std. Velocity, more or less ~1070fps. CCI SV ammo cycles my semi-auto 22's, Ruger MK IV, Marlin 60, Norinco JW-20 and my son's Savage A22 just fine.
Beyond 50yds using SV ammo, I don't have accuracy issues because of the projectile transitioning thru the sound barrier as it slows down.

Because you don't get the 'loud crack' when the projectile breaks the sound barrier, shooting SV ammo is quieter to shoot.
IMO when shooting SV ammo it's easier to get into/find that 'zen' spot for an afternoon of shooting small groups. :)
