22 cal AR clone

Good day fellow Canadians,

I was at the Ba** pro shop in toronto a few days ago, checking out the long guns. I do mostly airgunning but I did pass the Canadian Firearms course a few years ago. I just lost interest in the hobby.

I saw in the rack at Mossberg tactical in a camo finish. Didn't really discuss price, but I remembered seeing something years ago about an AR-22. Further reading tells me AR-type variants are now illegal in Canada, but more reading recommends a 10/22 (Remington or Ruger) with a marauder/nomad kit, or the Ruger SR-22.

I am located in Montreal.

Are there any dealers for either the 10/22 or the SR-22 in my area?

I like the look of the combat style 22's. Would be a nice way to introduce my son to the hobby.

Depends on your budget, If you want a really cheap 22 with an AR look the Mossberg 715t has been on sale at few places. Its just their 702 plinkster with awkwardly bolted on plastic AR style stock. I hear it takes 15 or so screws to take it apart for a detailed cleaning. I considered and rejected it.

Honestly when it comes to .22 semi auto I think the 10/22 has been the king for a while. So many of them out there, proven track record and so many aftermarket third party accessories for it. The SR-22 is 10/22 at twice the price and extra weight. I would say buy a standard 10/22 for around 250 and take a look at Archangel/Promag stocks like the 5.56 stock for it. I think mystic precision has the cheapest one for $165. It's not that complicated to swap stocks and there are plenty videos on youtube demonstrating step by step.

If the SR-22 is too heavy, wait till your a big kid or man up and hit the gym. They are a well built rifle and cost less than most builds. Very little plastic etc. AR variants are not illegal, stop reading anything from that source. If a rifle is determined to be an AR variant by the RCMP it is classed as restricted no matter the caliber or barrel length. Examples are the Umarex Colt .22, Smith and Wesson M&P 22, HK 416 rimfire clone etc. They are classed this way because the lower reciever is too similar to an AR even though they do not accept centerfire uppers, only the proprietary rimfire uppers. Looks like a duck, quacks like a baby duck must be a restricted rifle... Some NR black .22 rifles are the cheapo mossbergs, SR-22, 10/22 in aftermarket stock (Promag archangel, nomad, NEA-22, tapco the list goes on) Rem 597 VTR, you can also get the Archangel stock for the standard 597 model, ISSC MK22 scar look-alike etc.

Thanks for the opinions and advice. I like the little Picard holding his head icon. Cute. Next step is to get my PAL application going. I will do this after the new year. Then I can decide what to do. I was leaning towards the SR-22 as Ruger has a good rep and its ready to go out of the box. I will check on the after market stocks mentioned above and see if anything really jumps out at me. The Mossberg is a no-go. It looked good at Basspro, but some comments on here say to stay away. Thanks for the advice.
