.22 Cause hearing damage?

Anyone that thinks a normal .22 shooting normal ammo will not cause hearing damage is just being ignorant.

Past 85 DB everything is measured in exposure limits and acceptable loss.

If genetic twins had the same life with the same sound exposures but one wore hearing protection when shooting over say 5000 rounds of .22, I will guarantee that the twin with hearing protection will have better hearing then the one without. Now if this damage would make a noticeable difference for every day life... maybe, maybe not. But it would be measurable.

I think most people are in denial about how much hearing loss they actually have. There are often free hearing tests where you can get a print out of how well you hear and they print a baseline on it too.

Can you hear it now???

.22 caliber rifle 130 dB

Too low. A typical 22 rimfire rifle with high velocity ammo will meter about 140 dB which is also the limit for hearing damage from impulse sound.

High-powered shotgun 170 dB

Too high. A 12 ga shotgun would meter around 155 dB. Only very large magnum cases like the 338 Lapua would approach 170 dB.

Personally I never use hearing protection when plinking with the .22

I also don't wear ear protection when hunting and I'm shooting a 30-06 which is pretty damn loud. But I only get off a handfull of rounds a season. I use ear protection to sight it in at the range.

You want to talk about loud, I shot a .500 S&W Magnum at an indoor range a few weeks ago. That's LOUD.

Long story short, just about everything in life is bad for you. It's up to each of us to determine what level of "bad" we are willing to subject ourselves to in the name of fun.

My grandpa was shot in the ear with a .22 by my grandma. it's a tossup as to whether hearing loss or lead poisoning caused his demise.

I started my shooting career at an indoor range using .22 pistols . This was in 1969 and NOBODY used hearing protection. It was quite usual to shoot at least 100 rounds each evening and it got pretty loud with six guys on the firing line. I remember the first member to turn up wearing `earmuffs` was the butt of a lot of ridicule but realize now that I was the idiot as I have hearing loss at high frequencies . I am not saying it was the only reason as I worked in a noisy environment for years before it became mandatory to wear hearing protection. When hunting, I don`t wear HP as I am only going to fire one or two shots but if I am at the range, sharing the firing point with guys shooting a wide selection of calibers, then I always do. Nothing like a 300 Win Mag with a muzzle break going off about four feet from your ear to get your attention.!!
