Just getting into the 10/22 games here I ordered a 10/22 tactical target (I lol at the name) but I'm wondering if it is a standard chamber?

I see lots of info about different chambers and not shooting CCI in some, can some one give me chamber 101 for 22 rimfires?

Thanks.

Back in the day when I was still pretty new to firearms I had a 100 pack of some ammo that I believe was CCI, with steel cases I am pretty sure, and it would not chamber in my rifle. (cz 452 I guess it was. Long time ago) I was certain it wasn't magnum ammo, I knew that much, anyway. Your question reminded me of this, I wonder if it will be answered here.

Just spent half an hour on google images, don't think anything close exists with a shiny silver casing, maybe I dreamt it?

I believe it is a standard chamber. Insert a standard cartridge into a clean chamber using fingers only, you should know right away.

Here you go;

The standard factory Ruger chamber is the "Sporter" chamber it is the largest (sloppiest) chamber there is... they do this so that it will reliably feed all LR ammos...

Here are the standard chamber specs;

.22LR Chamber Dimensions:

Type______Length__Mouth Dia._Throat Dia._Taper @ Throat
Sporting____0.7751"____0.2307"____0.2270"
Bentz______0.6900"____0.2270"____0.2255"_____1.5° Taper
Match _____0.6876"____0.2267"____0.2248"
Win 52-D___0.5800"____0.2278"____0.2248"_____2.0° Taper

Keep in mind that the tighter the chamber, the fewer the types of ammo that will function (particularly out of semi's = more FTE's), also, generally the tigher chambers are more accurate...

The deal is finding the tighest chamber that will reliably cycle your chosen ammo.

Thanks hoytcanon!!

I had a Dlask barrel on my last 10/22 which had a Bentz chamber I believe. Also owned a Kimber Classic that had a match chamber. In both guns I found that is was often hard to eject an unfired round, usually required a pocket knife to pry it out, (or just fire into ground). I guess because the bullet is pushed into the rifling grooves upon chambering. Both those chambers prevented the use of CCI Stingers.

Thats the price you pay for an increase in accuracy.

My NEA barrel is the same way, they say it's a sporter chamber, but I have no live round extraction. I've heard an upgraded extractor will allow live round extraction on a bentz chamber?

hoytcannon, you have the answers! I remember you snapping up all my questions over on rimfire too!

Thanks.

I figured it would be a standard chamber but wasnt' sure if the did something to earn the title tactical target lol.

RWS R50 at one time had a nickle plated cases.
Also some of the old Gevelot HV ammo had nickle plated cases.
Today, only stingers to my knowledge.
Eagleye.

According to my 10/22 owner's manual, Stinger-type cases are longer than standard 22LR cases and can stick in the chambers of target rifles, including the Ruger 10/22 Target and Tactical rifles. Which sounds like what you have. I would say that CCI Stingers are a no-go in your gun.

Good to know about the NEA barrel specs. I just picked one up but have not installed it yet.

The previous 10/22 build (using the Dlask 12.5") had a Volquartsen extractor on it and it still failed to live extract about 50% of the time. I never tried the factory one, changed it out before ever firing a single round so not sure if it was an improvement.

Perhaps on my NEA barreled build I will leave the factory extractor in place for a while and see if the Volquartsen is much of an improvement when it comes to live round extraction.

Hmm good to know, I'll probably still install one and give it a try.
