.22 conversion for 1911 pistol

If you can find a real Colt .22 Conversion Unit, that would be the way to go. They are hard to find these days at reasonable prices, though. Someone had an old 1911 .45ACP for sale on the EE a few days back with a .22 Conversion Unit... maybe they'd separate them?

that was the inferance- the whole idea, at one time was to provide a cheap practise sub unit for the 45, but popularity and pricing has driven the price crazy- i have an ad somwhere advertising the colt sub unit for 50 bucks way back when
 
The ability to use the same trigger for both .22 and centerfire is why you buy a .22 conversion kit. It is not to replace a good .22 pistol but to allow you to have the same feel. There are lots of .22 kits for ARs, there are far more accurate .22 rifles then a .22 adapter in a 1/7 or 1/9 twist barrel.

I've got an old Genuine Colt .22 conversion... I've never actually tried it, but upon showing it to one expert I trust he claimed they don't work worth a @#%$. I also know one guy with a Kimber .22 conversion and he loves it. For the price though I would go with a dedicated .22 like a ruger or somethin.
 
Prior to buying my Kimber conversion kit, I had a Ruger Mk II. It is an excellent pistol and I enjoyed shooting it. In a desire to minimize handguns that just end up as safe queens I purchased the kimber kit. It has been also been a very enjoyable experience and I have one less handgun! Either way, you are getting a very good handgun.
 
I have a Marvel Precision unit 1. It is extremely accurate and a joy to shoot. I shoot IPSC with a 45 ACP. I found that I can put allot more trigger time on my gun and not pay a fortune for ammunition. I use it for trigger control and sight alignment. I have gone to the extent of creating half sized IPSC classic targets to make my training more beneficial. Then just a few days before a competition I convert back to my 45 slide to adjust to the recoil.

If you are tired of inaccurate 22 conversions for the 1911, Marvel Precision is your best bet. Unfortunately they will cost you almost $500 USD, but that is sometimes how much people will pay for ammo in one sitting. Long term, it pays itself off very quickly.
 
I picked up an Original Colt conversion about 3 years ago. I brought it to a local gunsmith and had him machine and fit an oversized bushing. It came out simply awesome. I would agree that you sacrafice accuracy a bit, but in return you gain longer sessions using your 45. The sound that emits is also quite different from a regular .22lr pistol. I think that it is much louder and it does give a slightly bigger kick. Unlike the Marvel, this conversion does keep the slide open after the last shot. A feature not found on many conversions.

I just bought a Kimber .22 Conversion a couple of weeks ago. On my first shoot and only 100 rounds in, it needs to go in for warranty repairs. After one Fail to feed left a notch at the entry of the bore it will no longer feed a round into the chamber. Plus, it only comes with one plastic mag which doesnt seem to hold the .22 cartridges properly at all. The cartridges are all misaligned and almost overlapping themselves in the mag, which is propably why it misfed that round so badly that it damaged the bore :(
