was out with a couple heavy barrel 22's and was getting the occasional flyer sometimes up to 4 inches from the main group! tried different brands and still had the occasional flyer is it me I don't think so especially I was shooting at 50yds! has anyone else found this with todays bulk ammo?

You bet , all I've tried , but it's cheap shooting and some gophers got to live for the next crop . No 22 target shooting for me except the old martini with the peep - it's nice to blame the Ammo

you get the range of 22 failures- flyers, failure to feed, stale primers and whatever else you can dream up- that's why they and me for that ,matter don't on 22 for anything serious

The better the gun/the better the ammo=fewer flyers

Every rimfire I've ever owned/shot had ammo types it loves, and ones it won't shoot well no matter what. There are extremes in both cases. One-ragged-hole groups from the right gun/ammo....a shotgun pattern with a semi shooting bulk crap. Sometimes you get lucky and find a gun that shoots cheap ammo really well, but I've had allot of 22s come and go over the years..and can only think of 1 time this has been the case. CZ452~Winchester 333 (white box)

There is hope though~make sure the gun (incl. bore/chamber) is nice and clean, take a variety of ammo out with you (including something better than bulk) and see what's really happening. Probably worth noting that most, if not all bulk ammo is high velocity..and high velocity ammo is always the least likely to shoot the most accurately. Not saying impossible, just not likely. If it's a semi you're shooting instead of a bolt gun, these consistencies (in my experience) open up even further.

Other factors that result in wonky results on paper~scopes not holding zero, scopes not tightened down, damaged crown on the barrel (careless cleaning and/or manufacturing defect)

Perhaps I don't shoot enough .22lr but I've never had a 4" flyer at 50 yrds. My mass production bolts seem to shoot bulk ammo (Blazer, AE) into consistent groups well enough.
My peep sighted S&L single shot is even more accurate shooting bulk CCI SV.

What rifles? bulk ammo? Also as mentioned above, was it a repeater or a single shot? If not careful with a repeater it 'can' take a chunk out of the face of the projectile if it hits the edges of the chamber when feeding.

I'd clean the rifle, then purchase and hand feed it some standard velocity / subsonic target ammo...

I use a rim gauge to reduce a number of flyers :) works great....
Also, a single shot adapter can help ;) - less damage to the bullet tip

That, and, if you want to eliminate or reduce flyers, weigh each round on a digital scale. In a recent weighing exercise of 250 rounds of CCI Standard Velocity, I found differences in overall cartridge weight of 50.2 grains to 51.5 grains. Most fell in the 50.9 to 51.3 grain range, but it is an indication of the lack of consistency in ammo manufacture.

I was thinking of hyper velocity stuff in a bolt action for long range stuff. 300 yards plus.....

thanks. one rifle was a target 10/22 the other a savage heavy barrel bolt! the 4inch shot away from main group only happed once but there multiple flyers that were questionable because rifles were shot from bench with sand bags on both ends so nice and stable shots but cant figure out why weird groups? scopes are not the cheapest scope either with parallax adj too. shot some federal gold medal stuff as well a little better but not much. I am loosing confidence in todays rimfire ammo.

The ammunition is the key to reducing flyers. I shoot several high quality target rimfires, and the better the ammo, the more dependable
the groups, and the fewer flyers there are.
However, as mentioned already, the cost of top quality ammo is substantial, so if you are running on the cheap stuff, expect mediocre
results. [Flyers, misfires, large velocity spreads, etc, etc.]

You will always hear someone on here stating that his 22 rimfire shoots consistent, tiny groups with some bulk ammo. Well, I always take
those statements with a grain of salt. No competitor in his right mind would enter a serious competition without choosing a top quality
match ammo of a lot number that has proven accurate in HIS rifle. The results are gratifying if one does his homework. Dave.

Where did you find the CCI SV bulk ammo? I've never seen it but the regular CCI standard velocity shoots will in all the .22s I have tried it in.

Tenda Canada.....
CCI Standard Velocity Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 40 Gr LRN Case of 5000

IN STOCK
$339.99

I quit buying that bulk ,,lr ammo ..a while back
Accuracy is a must in my books..

ELEY high velocity h.p. came out couple years back... wow..
My c.z. 455 evolution will put five under a dime.. incl flyers..

I am also consistantly on keeping the barrel lead free..couple copper boolits every 20 shots keeps the accuracy up to par..
They are a little more expensive, but worth the trade off..
Happy shooting

Check out Tenda and that ammo is a case of 5000 but appears to be paper boxed variety (100 boxes of 50).
You can buy a case of Eley Tenex but at over $2000 it is hardly bulk ammo (100 boxes of 50).
Bulk to me implies rounds in a box lose as in WW 222, Federal 525, Remington Thunderbolt 500, etc.
CCI Standard velocity also comes in plastic trays of 100 and they are different but rifle preference will tell the tale.
They also come in "bulk" . . . 5000 rounds in 50 trays of 100.

Since almost all true match 22 rimfire rifles are single shot, adapter is often not needed.

I have tried rim and weight sorting ammo. With less expensive mid priced stuff, it has some virtue,
but I found it a waste of time with ELEY match, RWS R50 or 100, Lapua Midas, etc.

Agreed. I do sort my mid-range stuff (mostly CCI Std Vel) with very good results, but there should be no need with the high-end ammo. The care in manufacture and QA is what is reflected in the price.
