.22 For 7 Year Old Daughter & Wife

The rascals are awesome little rifles.... only complaint I have is the peep sight aperture is too big.... my son has cycled 3-400 rounds through bis and is deadly with it out to 30 yards....

Plus its blaze orange and weighs nothing so dad gets to carry it on the trap line.... lol

Now that you have you daughters rifle figured out, what one of your 22s does your wife like the best? I remember getting my GF to pick, i laid out a bunch of them, all different, I thought she would pick a lever or pump, she ended up choosing the chrome nylon 66. She didn't want one, she wanted that one! She liked the light weight and the sights.

My 9 year old has a mossy 715t its great for her, load 1 at first, last shot hold open after fired, now she shoots in semi auto with full mag, also rails are great I put a pushbutton bipod that doubles as a grip on it and she loves that, telescoping stock will also grow with her, and everyone also thinks it has a cool factor which is a big deal for kids. Your wife very simple marlin 795 again you can load as many RDS as comfortable and the very important feature for beginners is last shot bolt hold open telling them exactly when its empty this is not available in any 10/22 I have seen, not to mention the 795 is an absolute tack driver, all just my 2 cents and experiences

thanks guys. I think I will take her into the store to look at the rifles when the time comes. On a side point, what is with the warning on the savage box about the oil inside causing cancer and birth defects or something to that nature.....what oil are they talking about?

Lawyer induced azz covering... it is going on everywhere these days... an unfortunate necessity, when there are thousands of lazy azzed people looking for excuses to sue so they don't have to get their butts off the sofa and go to work...

It's great to read that you got your daughter a gun now.

Before you leap on a 10-22 let your wife check out a Henry H001 lever rifle. Rimfire tends to be a little boring to shoot given the light recoil. Operating a bolt or a lever or a pump brings a little more fun factor to the shooting for many folks.

Again I go back to my club's Jr.22 program. Along with the single shot rifles the club owns the other guy and I often bring along one of our own guns for the kids to use so they get some variety. When asked the kid's hands down prefer my Henry lever gun to the Ruger 10-22. And this despite the Ruger having a scope on it. Operating that lever for each shot just seems to draw them in like bees to honey. When the Ruger comes along with me it might get shot two or three relays out of our typical 5 or 6 relays. When the Henry is there it's VERY rare to see it left in the rack during any relay. Even going coming off the third year of packing the Henry along the magic is still alive.

So I suggest that you at least let her handle a Henry in the store. Mine is kid tested and approved. And adults like it too. :D

Keep in mind that Henry makes a variety of these lever models. The basic H001 with the round barrel is light and easy to shoulder. The upscale models with the heavier octangonal barrels are nice in their way but some folks find them muzzle heavy due to the barrel. So I strongly suggest that for your wife and, eventually, daughter to use that you stick with the base model with the lighter round barrel.

I firmly believe in first teaching anyone how to operate a firearm such as a single shot, pump, bolt and lever action before moving them into a semi action rifle. Any model is fun to shoot!

FWIW - my wife absolutely loves my SR-22. It's more money than a std 10/22 but she loves the cool factor and adjustable stock. And now since she's pissed at you for not getting her something when you got one for your daughter, you know you'd best be buying her something nice! ;)

My 5 & 6 year old girls have the rascal in hot pink. It's what my 5 year old had been asking for for her birthday. They love it and the wife shoots my SR 22 and is buying herself an MP22 to go with it.

My wife likes the Rascal, too. It is small for her, but she doesn't mind.
My 6 year old daughter likes it as well, though it's still an inch or two longer than her length of pull. The Rascal has an LOP of 11-1/4"; she's around 9-1/2 to 10. Still, she's happy shooting it...
She and her 3 yr old sister picked blue. And yes, the 3 yr old likes it too.

Bought my daughter a TC Hot Shot a couple of years ago. I tried to get the pink one for her but had to go with the black version as that is all they had at the time. i find myself borrowing it more and more now as it makes a great little road chicken gun and weighs next to nothing. They may be hard to find now but if you can get your hands on one, I'm sure they would enjoy it.

I started the Grand daughter(8 yrs old) off with the Savage Rascal. she took to it like a duck to water , I also bought a spare stock for a 10/22 and shortened it to fit her .
she was popping balloons at 25 yards within a few mins with the rascal . beginners should be started at closer range , and helps if they see that they are hitting something like the balloons , she wants to go to 50 yards next time !!!
