The Ruger Mk II club gun that I am using while doing my "range safety course" is a very nice pistol. I can hit accurately with it, and I shoot better at 20 yards than I did at 10 yards with a .40 Beretta 96. I'm thinking about buying a .22 automatic to shoot when I don't have any 9mm ammunition to shoot, or just to have fun at the range.

I think that choosing a .22LR is good way to start out. I originally had the idea of just starting with a 9mm. Then I really starting thinking about the cost issue.
I know that you can reload for cheap, but I was (and still am) a new shooter. I wanted to find out if I liked it or not.
Turns out I did, and I still want to get a 9mm. But keeping cost down allows one to practice more for the same amount of dollars.
And is it sometimes nice not having to pick up all your brass. I can just sweep it all up to keep the range clean and put it in the bad brass bin when I am finished.

I don't play golf, and maybe I never will, but this analogy is a real good one. Really what it comes down to is how much you want to pay to play. The more you play (or shoot in this case) the better you'll get, and the more you'll enjoy the sport.
